pre-shower thought :

Lots of comments, links, articles here on Geekzone.

Hardly any upvotes.

Is upvoting not a thing here on Geekzone?

Did I miss a kind of cool geek code, all unspoken wink-wink, secret handshakes no upvotey thingy ?

Are people alarmed when I upvote them?

Occum's: I missed the memo

I use the +1 too. Not all the time, but for something that I think is well written and on point.

I think we're just all a little more reserved with what we deem deserves a +1!

A +1 has to be earned.

Yeah this isn't really the place to be slinging +1's around indiscriminately. That's what Fb/Twitter/Instagram are for. As per Trig42's comment, I'll +1 for something well written and lines up with my thoughts on the topic.

I use it when I agree with something or think a post was particularly helpful, but don't have anything especially meaningful to add that would justify a reply.

I can sincerely and honestly say that all of my two thousand seven hundred and seven plus ones were well deserved and hard earned.

A +1 is earned. If you want Likes and Hearts... Well there's Facebook and Instagram for that.

Look at the Geekzone Dashboard for the top +1 earners.

Each user has a +1 count in their user details panel on the left of their post.  I guess people are quite selective with their +1's which means when you get one it's been earned.

Just writing +1 as a reply to a comment in a thread is not done though, that's just a wasted comment and contributes nothing to the conversation.

An upvote/downvote system like Reddit could be useful.  But also could be rife with bullying.

Yeah, I recall there was a thread about adding a -1 option a year or so back but the end decision was to not go there.

I was thinking of this today when I read a post in the Jeremy Kyle thread - I didn't have the energy to respond but certainly thought it deserved a big -1!

Like most of the others who have commented, I'll +1 where the comment is well-written, and lines up with what I'm thinking, and perhaps to signal support rather than duplicate comments (although I've just done that here).

On reflection, though, I don't know that I pay much attention to the +1 count on a message. For instance, if a remark hasn't been +1'ed, it doesn't change my views of it in any way. And similarly, lots of +1's doesn't make me think that I should read it more than any other message. So I guess I question the value of the +1 system, if it doesn't change behaviour or perspectives? But then the same applies for any other upvoting/downvoting system on comments. Where it has been useful on other sites is to promote a response to a question, where people use it to promote an answer so you can find solutions faster. But it's pretty rare to find it used appropriately.
