Jeeves: Still not sure why the entire discussion thread was removed though? If there were some comments within the thread that breached the FUG, remove just those posts?

My comment about the lack of crypto discussion was merely an observation, not an accusation. I know GZ has quite the conservative demography, so it's not entirely surprising. Perhaps I might start a general crypto thread and see how it goes :D

As someone who works directly in the security and crypto industry I find comments like this extremely amusing.

Why use a perfectly capable single ledger database when having a distributed one with all the significant limitations (settlement transaction time, 51% control and your ledger is unreliable and more). Those wanting to sell the idea that Bitcoin will take over the world and is the future has drunk some serious kool aid or has a vested interest in the pyramid scheme.

Until a central government backs it and the necessary controls (Anti Money Laundering, Fraud / insurance protections etc) are put in place it will only ever be used by scammers, drug or weapons dealers and people who have purchased into the pyramid scheme with the expectation they will cash out as millionaires.

Blockchain is a solution without an actual problem that hasn't already been solved many times over.

I’m earning some Cryptocurrency from playing a space Warfare game. Must be a real criminal or fallen for some Pyramid scheme even though enjoy the game.

What makes you think the thread was removed because of the topic? It wasn't.

That was not my main issue. It is a heavy handed way to remove the entire thread. I would have expected moderation and deletion of a number of posts as there were a few, let's call them immature responses and a lack of understanding of cryptocurrencies, tokens, blockchain and e.g. Bitcoin.

And I suspect a few people who have been speculating and bought when it was high and sold when low. There is a learning curve with investing, not only with cryptocurrencies.Buying when it is in high demand is the worst you can do, whether it is stocks, houses or anything else.

Just take care out there.

The OP actually wondered why this was not covered in NZ media. It is sad to see even my trusted geekzone platform now falls into the same category. Hope this approach can be reconsidered, perhaps after cleansing of some of the posts.

As I said, the topic was not even considered when I removed the thread and banned the OP.

No need to create a conspiracy theory on why we banned a conspiracy theorist troll.

To me it was genuine news quoted from a reliable source and hence interesting for people, like freelancers and developers. A group which is I believe is highly represented on this forum.

That cryptocurrencies are still fringe might be the case but there are many more topics on this forum which are fringe. Electric cars are fringe, so are Windows phones are. One is upcoming, one is dying off. Same for cryptocurrencies, some are growing and interesting, many are scam and dying. IRD is paying attention because overall interest is growing.

Sure there are edge cases that have validity.
Much like drug dealers use fiat currencies.

The fact there is no governance over it means that you have the same degree of security if you threw a $20 into the air on a calm day in Wellington.

The entire banking industry in built on trust and risk. There is all the risk and none of the trust.

Usually my policy is to remove threads from people that are banned for trolling. That's what happens. If you want to discuss that topic, feel free to create a new thread yourself.

Crypto currencies are the solution to central governments... I can't see them supporting one.

Perhaps this is useful if you like to experience spending bitcoins.

My own trial with paying with bitcoin is that it is generally really smooth. Scan the QR-code from the shops device with your mobile camera, verify the amount and accept it. Shop owner sees confirmation within seconds and done. Only by large payments (over say $200) you might want to wait for a confirmation which takes on average 10 minutes when using Bitcoin specifically.

I seem to remember maybe about 10 years ago in Geekzone, you could pay your subscription with bitcoins, correct me if I`m wrong freitasm.
