Really disappointed to see an entire thread deleted today. It is a very heavy handed way to remove discussion on this topic.

The OP actually wondered why this was not covered in NZ media. It is sad to see even my trusted geekzone platform now falls into the same category. Hope this approach can be reconsidered, perhaps after cleansing of some of the posts.

Thanks.

I too wondered why it was deleted.

I have noticed a distinct lack of crypto currency discussions in general, for a supposed geek website.

I don't think it was the bitcoin content - the thread had/was rolling off topic and didn't seem to be 100% constructive when I glanced through it.
If I was thinking of posting LOL as a comment in reaction to a person's post mid-thread something is not right - don't normally feel that way about posts here.

(but it had got funny...)

Probably removed on OP's request? The bonkers 'a policeman followed me' thread is gone too.

As for why Crypto, isn't covered by the media?... because it's a complete an utter waste of time and a fad that will die in no time. Until I can take an eftpos card and spend my crypto on real stuff, it will be nothing but something used to buy drugs and weapons.

What makes you think the thread was removed because of the topic? It wasn't.

As I said, the topic was not even considered when I removed the thread and banned the OP.

No need to create a conspiracy theory on why we banned a conspiracy theorist troll.

Perhaps because the people who are here are not really interested in that topic? If you are, create a thread and talk about.

The reality is that a lot of people instantly think "crypto bros exit scam" when cryptocurrencies shows its head. I guess this makes the topic really niche. If you have something to talk about it, go for it. Just don't come with conspiracy theories that MSM is not talking about crypto because some globalist behind-the-scenes power is controlling the content flow.

Possibly one of the reasons it was deleted was the misleading title. IRD wasn't "allowing" or endorsing payment of wages/salaries by bitcoin (or other crypto "assets" - as they called them), but sending out the message that if payment was made in cryptocurrency, then they'd tax that income. Also, if a crypto asset that didn't meet the definition of having a primary purpose of being a "currency", or the value not tied to a fiat currency, then they wouldn't consider that to be a legitimate payment method.

Probably actually "not good for bitcoin" - or at best neutral,  but  "This is good for bitcoin" is one of the favourite memes used by pump and dumpers to counter bad or any news, along with the tiresome "hodl" when the price is dropping through the floor.

If IRD stated that they'd accept bitcoin as payment, now that would have been news.

And before someone comes with "CENSORSHIP! I can't see the topic talking about the moderation of topics in the list anymore"... I have moved this to correct sub-forum.

Let's not forget, I think there is a secret, invite only crypto forum on here... If you know the right people :-)

So GZ has nothing against crypto discussion, but perhaps characterises it as so likely to be polarising that the only manageable way to have it covered here is to restrict discussion to those that don't hold extremely negative views.

Man, it would be interesting if that got applied to other forums!!!

Cheers - N

And by the way, it's not a public forum because it was created by a subscriber - it's their private sub-forum. They invite whomever they want to.

Because the private sub-forum is not a "Geekzone" forum but a subscriber forum there's absolutely no truth in this paragraph.

It's not our policy to block discussions on crypto currencies/assets. It just doesn't happen because people aren't really into discussing it. Perhaps because the whole thing is - let's be frank here - irrelevant to day-to-day lives?

Completely reasonable - sorry I didn't realise it was created by a sub.

(I think the reason they created it though probably has to do with my reasoning - but as you point out, absolutely nothing to do with you or GZ policy)

If it is not in the FUG, it's not policy.

We only create a sub-forum if there's enough discussions on a topic. There'd be no reason to create a sub-forum specifically to discuss crypto currency/assets simply because (as mentioned by the OP) we don't see these around here. The same policy applies when creating a sub-forum for an ISP for example. Everything goes into "NZ Broadband" until we see a good number of discussions for a specific provider. Then we consider their presence here before we create a new forum.

Some people just don't know everything that goes behind the scenes, and assume the worst.

Still not sure why the entire discussion thread was removed though? If there were some comments within the thread that breached the FUG, remove just those posts?

My comment about the lack of crypto discussion was merely an observation, not an accusation. I know GZ has quite the conservative demography, so it's not entirely surprising. Perhaps I might start a general crypto thread and see how it goes :D
