Nothing stopping you from starting a geeky server, and if ppl join, they join. Dosent cost anything except a bit of time. Just don't call it Geekzone unless MF approves it :D

I have no interest in starting an unofficial geekzone channel.   I probably wouldnt join an unofficial one myself.

But there doesnt seem to be much desire for this from the community and quite a bit of push back, which is fine just means the community doesn't want this.

Question is though, is geekzone the community or the forum?  If its the forum then yes, thats the primary thing to focus on and drive people to.  If its the community then an aging method of communication like forums could be driving members away/discouraging younger members from joining.   But I'm not saying replace the forum.  Two completely different ways to communicate.    As a community sometimes you just want to quickly chat, sometimes you want specific help that you know wont be seen straight away.

eg help my 2degrees is down?  that would be great for a chat, quickly seeing if others have the problem

eg help my phone update got bricked?  that needs more specialized help and would be much better on a forum.

Both could be used to drive members to each other.

I have no idea what geekzone is at its core, and I have no idea what the numbers are.

I'm not leaving geekzone, i will continue using it, its super handy.    Just 5 years ago I used it a lot more than I do today.  But that may just be me??

To me it's both a community and a forum and that's ideal.

I do wish there was more drive and more community things for users. I'm pretty big into contributing and discussion.

Still yet to participate in a GZ meet up but those sound awesome.

What "drive and more community things"? We have a good team of moderators that keep things clean, interested people and companies that help around, people who ask good questions and an animated debate area.

LIve meetups are on hold for obvious reasons but these were quite frequent - not many forums host live activities and certainly not here. And we had users planning their regional events (usually outside the main centres) and we supported them - arranging sponsorship and even attending.

More than happy to expand a bit.

I think I remember mentioning a bit earlier when the discussion was being had on changing the front page a bit. I had mentioned then that would love to see more community driven posts and blogs or reviews from the users.

Having more of people's reviews, blogs, community stuff on the front page would be pretty awesome even if it links to threads that users have created about it (such as a brief description on the front page and then a link to the thread to discuss it or see the full content) that sort of thing.

Hope what I'm saying makes sense because in my head I see the home page being more filled with user generated content and community driven discussions around user experiences(such as reviews).

Wasn't at all thinking of the moderators, you all do a fantastic job and I have nothing but high praise with how this place is moderated.

For me I don't work with a screen open at work so the in stant feedback of real-time conversation isn't for me. I look at website maybe twice a day.

I use discord as a meeting place once per week for a YouTube Patreon meet-up with channel owner.

So web forum is what I'd use.
