elpenguino:

Some older photos were affected so was probably a Nokia 7 (android) at that time (or 7.1, can't remember exactly)

The photos in this post were fine when posted in Sept 2021 and have inverted only relatively recently.

I have seen several other examples in some of my posts but having trouble finding them.

Hmm thats interesting, its got no exif data at all in it. which would explain why if you held the phone landscape the other way to what they expected that it would be upside down if the data was scrubbed.

The normal cause is people open things in non orientation aware software and then "fix" the rotation and save it and the broken software writes it out with the same data that it came in with.

That's the answer and why I asked when.

Remember we scrubbed EXIF data in all images for better privacy.

This shouldn't be a problem, except if the data was wrong and the photos were turned upside down because of the original wrong data.

Seems heavy handed to strip it all when some like orientation and colourspace are important for the image to display correctly.

RunningMan:

Bit hard to tell which way up it's supposed to be. I see the red object to the bottom right.

Possibly I shot that one in landscape to rotate later and didn't.

How about this one? It's pretty clear which way this is to be viewed.

Is paint not a suitable photo editor ?😁

I support the scrubbing of EXIF data and this does appear to have only affected a few photos.

As a test, this is a re-post of one of the photos in my linked post earlier today which was OK when posted in 2021  - but went inverted much later on. When posting it now, it gets inverted when copied from my album with the GZ 'upload an image' tool.

This is a simple copy (from my album) and paste into this box. I have never done this before - silly but didn't realise you could post photos this simple way. I've always used the 'upload an image' tool.

This tells me the upload script for the drop image wasn't updated to scrub the EXIF data.

I will update the script on the test server later and change it to keep this information.

It still goes back to some cameras and settings recording the wrong orientation.

I've asked @eracode via PM to send me the original for testing.

@freitasm Any findings from your testing?

I've uploaded the photos you sent me and they were in the correct orientation.

Now the photos were embedded in the email instead of being an attachment. The email app could have corrected them or changed size before sending.

Is there a way to share the original photo, via a sharing platform like OneDrive, Google Photos, Dropbox or similar?

Thank you, @eracode, for sending me the original image via Dropbox - the email client was removing more data from the image. With the original image I was able to see what was happening and fix it.

Instead of removing all EXIF data, I am now clearing only GPS coordinates. The image uploads fine:

@eracode, could you please test in this thread again? Either upload or just drag-and-drop in the reply box is fine.
