Some comments...

Registrations opened at 12pm sharp - if you see posts on this forum at 11am saying "I'm in" it is because your profile is set to the wrong timezone. However timezone settings won't change the fact the server's date/time is correctly set and registrations will open 12pm - including the next wave tomorrow 15th January 12pm.

lchiu7, I am sorry you can't babysit the webpage for five minutes as you say. You can imagine the effort everyone else here on Geekzone is putting on then, since this is being organised since November last year - a lot more than five minutes.

I see Christchurch is still short of two registrations today. Needless to say, last year we didn't run a CHC event, and if the event doesn't fill up then we won't do another one next year. That's why we are not doing a HB one this year.

I think running the registrations in three wave is the fairest way of doing it. We give people three chances to register, and people with more participation in our community get better changes of getting a seat - three times more than people who register just to get to the free pizza, drinks and prizes. This was one of the complaints from previous years so I created the waves to make it fair to everyone.

It does require you to be ready on time, but you have more chances to be in than previous years. And what's a few minutes to be sure you are in good company?

Good luck tomorrow. I will start a waiting list soon.

Given that as at 12pm and whenever I've tried since then it's told me reservations aren't open yet and to come back on the 14th at 12pm (which would be a neat trick since it's 1:42 pm on the 14th now) I think I can safely assume I've missed out.
When I checked my profile my timezone settings (not an actual timezone but a time of day - what's with that?) were an hour behind - do we have to manually change them for daylight saving? .NET 3.5 is actually pretty good with timezones - it looks like Geekzone profiles could do with an upgrade. But that's an SEP.

Ah well, never mind. Pizza's probably bad for me anyway.

I could believe that there is an awful lot of effort going in to making these events happen. Getting all the sponsors you have wouldn't be a 5 minute job in itself...that would be a huge job.

As you say - running the waves does seem a fair way to do the registration - and gives people like myself who get stuck in meetings a few opportunities to try and free ourselves from the meetings so that we can come on and register. :)

I look forward to seeing the final list and meeting everyone at the evening - I'm sure it will be a brilliant event. :)

At least try. Having an negative attitude is not going to get you in.

At 11:55am tomorrow, take 10 minutes out of your day and get one of the last 12 spaces. The prize pool alone makes it worth while.

Folks, a question though...

We will be accommodating 180 people in three centres. Some are traveling to attend the event (some even attending more than one). The main reason for that is because of the huge networking opportunities these events allow.

But... Would you rather have a 400 people event in a single location instead, effectively making it twice as large, but in a single venue?

400 people at one pizza evening with alcohol? I think it could get messy and go downhill fast. Enough alcohol for 400 people with some drinking more than others surely can't end entirely well?

Edit: In my humble opinion I think perhaps the format might have to change if you change to a single event with 400 people in one place. Mind you all that pizza can't be too bad, right?

IMHO the 3 venues are the best way to go making it easier for all ppl to have access to at least 1 party close to where they live plus with 400 at 1 event it would be easy to miss networking with some with so many there, it could make it to noisy to really be able to converse easily.

As it is now is great, 60 is good number to mix and mingle with, I look forward to meet people at the auckland event.

Hi Mauricio, I agree that the networking opportunities are one of the main benefits - to be honest, maybe there are some super-networkers out there, but for myself, I won't event be able to meet a decent fraction of the 60 people going to each of the events as they are currently formatted. So even if the number of attendees is increased dramatically I still only have the same amount of time to network during an evening so would probably still only meet the same number of people.

I agree, that the current number of people is probably the best - 400 people in one event would change the event completely.

I also agree that there probably won't be enough time as it is to properly meet everyone and network...looking forward to the opportunity however.

This was my thinking. Perhaps a few more than 60 could still work, but 400 wouldn't be the same! I've enjoyed the past two Auckland events in the current format.
