Kyanar: Personally, I'm more in favour of the "Ignore" functionality present in other commercial forum scripts. You can ignore a person, but all that happens is instead of seeing their posts you see "1 post(s) ignored from (user). Click here to show anyway" and if you click it the full post appears as if by magic (JS element hiding clearly ;))

+1 for this implementation.

I like the idea of a +1 or like button with a -1 or dislike button that when enough -ve comments happen it hides their post with of course the option to show it anyway.

It works well on other sites although I do see no big deal in having a Plonk button in general but would be best to relate that to the particular thread that they posted on not a overall ignore / plonk.

Yes, that's more like what I was thinking. This is pretty much plonking anyway.

Ah, excellent. Only thing I wasn't sure of is the bit about having an easy way to show it - if I recall newsgroups correctly (and I probably don't) adding to the killfile resulted in you having no idea a user had even posted (depending on whether you set the preference to kill the entire thread with followups or just the original post of course).

"Easy way" is like the Answer link - every thread filter shows a message:

We would show something like "You have filters in place..."

freitasm: Hmmm. So what's the problem here then? "Plonk" in my view (and by definition) is when YOU put someone into an ignore list that is for YOUR use only, not affecting anyone else. That's what I was thinking, and that's what Kyanar suggested.

How can filtering your personal view can "create[s] tension on the forums"?

As I thought, bring it on.

I'd prefer something like a tempban. Logged-in users can vote down a user, and when their score gets too low they (user/IP address) can't post for 24 hours or so.

I'm sorry, worst idea I've seen since I joined. I wouldn't want to be part of a community that employed this manner of moderation.

Plonking should not affect anyone. It should only ignore posts.

Anything that allows users to vote someone out can cause problems, including bullying, cliques, etc.

If you deploy this (and I am still hoping you will opt not to), I'd prefer the option was able to be turned off so the option didn't even appear near posts unless it was enabled by the individual users.

Your opinion is just as valuable as mine. Personally I would use the feature (but I think there has been enough negative votes it's unlikely to happen).

Maybe I should brush up on scripting and just rewrite the page as it comes in.

No thanks I am pro free speech etc.....I wouldnt regard this forum as an open discussion with people free to express their views if this was implimented.....It would just turn into a narrow "in" bunch of groupies......and it shuts down the flow of info from varying view points...Rgds....Laurie

Its a great idea for lots of forums but certainly isn't necessary for Geekzone. And if it did become necessary for Geekzone I wouldn't see any point in being here.
