Batwing: I do worry for the longevity of GZ should it not modernise - if hadn't already become invested years ago I definitely would not be persevering in what's largely a mobile-first online world

I'm willing to be that there are only a handful of under 30 year olds on here ... The younger generation are not interested in online forums.

Many of the under thirties I know, and those like me in their thirties use their phone as their primary way of accessing the internet. So it's not surprising really.

BarTender: I think the best option would be to build integration to Tapatalk which has widespread usage across many forum platforms with a mobile app.
So if we wanted to start a givealittle and pitch in for getting it done I am all for that. I do however note that many of the folks in this thread don’t have subscriber next to their name, and most likely run ad blockers…. So I don’t know where the money to fund it will magically appear from. Unless the BFDL goes into the garage and sells one of his McLarens.

If someone gives me $250k without asking for the money back, then we could think of getting an outfit to do some work, including updated website, mobile app, etc.

Geekzone makes little money, most of which goes to colocation, CDN services, security, software, hardware, accounting, SaaS, tax and GST.

It's a work of love, and I thought of closing it down a couple of years ago. But then we would have a New Zealand where people would be fucked if they ever needed help with anything tech related.

I have a full time job (Mauricio Freitas | LinkedIn) and the work I do here (maintaining the site, IT admin, backup, security, moderation) is free. Our moderators do their bit, for free. I pay them with my friendship.

For a time a few years back I had to put money into the site.

Some people contacted me offering to help. But none of that came to pass after I said "ok".

Because these people still need to work for money and had no time to put into coding a platform they had no hope of making money of.

Not brave enough to show us the compose text box on mobile though lol, that's what doesn't fit. Barrier to engagement not so much lurking.

I mostly access on an iPad, but when out with iPhone in safari I just turn it to landscape and it’s fine. I don’t compare it with other forums because it is what it is and I really appreciate how much I’ve learned from Geekzone and that BDFL isn’t Meta with unlimited resources, so I especially respect that it’s a work of love and we should support it so we don’t lose it.

As a lifetime subscriber who doesn’t see ads, wouldn’t mind at all if there was an option to turn ads on or off ourselves within the site to help it gather more revenue.

Maybe those that appreciate GZ could occasionally send the odd donation to the Boss to fund late night coffees as he keeps it going. Really needs to invest in a shiny new Donate button.

Thanks, again for your support. The option to show/hide ads is in your profile settings page. Although I do not expect subscribers to show ads.

Still don't believe they would be using it even if there was a Geekzone app, or if there was a mobile version.

We are a bunch of "geeks" on here, some quirks with the website can be expected. It's similar for other electronic, geek type websites I frequent. They all have their quirks. Have a look at forum.core-electronics.com.au/ and the whirlpool forums and make your comparison. Geekzone is by far the best I have come across.

It’s interesting that some of the most vocal complainers here are not even subscribers - so they are complaining about something they get for free - provided by someone who does it for free.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

If you do not block ads, thank you. About 45% of people block ads all the time.

Didn’t know we could turn the ads on and off so thanks Freitasm. I’ve turned them on in iPad and found them so unobtrusive that they are hardly noticeable. As long as they don’t start flashing madly am happy to leave them on if it helps the site. Not sure how it would be on the phone but will check today when out.

Even if we switch ads on every alternate month or according to mood knowing it helps GZ is reason enough.

This.

I've been thinking for months about having the rich text editor on mobile. It would use more space, and people won't really tap on little buttons to add a link, so I decided not to. Keep it simple.

Both this reply and my last post composed entirely on my S23, in Chrome, including the image uploads.

This made me think. As we're true geeks, the command line is our friend.

Should we be thinking of a pure 80 x 25 text based interface (with an option of either green or amber)

:)
