Have to say, being forced to view ads so i can see live updates on the homepage is frustrating.

Why is this a requirement for your improvements?

I would suggest reading this before complaining about any consequences of blocking ads.

Short one: because that's how it works.

Long one: browsers download scripts as they find those in the html received. Downloading scripts block other actions inside the browser - it won't render pages until the scripts are all downloaded. If there are problems (international connectivity down, slow) then the pages do not show until all the scripts are downloaded or a timeout happens.

By using javascript async or defer (Google is your friend) we can show the page first, and then load the scripts and the ads, analytics code, or anything else.

A script is a script is a script. There's no distinction, so all script on the page are treated the same. This includes the live refresh in the frontpage, which is just another script.

So that's the balance. Have a page that will render and show content even if there's a problem loading scripts hosted somewhere else, or have a page that will stop and wait until everything is downloaded before showing the content.

Totally understand how defer and async requests work with JS. :) I'm just not sure why ad blocker's are thinking that your live updates are ads.

Surely defining a script block as defer or async wouldn't cause this? Otherwise sites all over the show would have massive blocks of content hidden when ad blockers are active.

I'm actually looking at implementing deferred / async script blocks on our site - hence further enquiry. :)

I thought you didn't know. Basically ad blockers are blocking the js mother code that actually load all other code. Just look in our source.

Ppl want me to do stuff for free all the time...must be my quiet nature.

My only comment about adds, not just this site, is that they have a "can't see the wood for the trees" thing going on.
fast sites are good though, hate waiting for stuff...wonder if anyone has done stats on time spent waiting for webpages to load, sure it's longer than traffic lights.

As I said we have been working on making Geekzone faster for ages... Database changes, login system changes, script changes, using Aptimize, etc. The Aptimize option to change all script into defer or async was turned off and I decided to give it a go.

It does feel faster - mainly because you can start reading before ads are even loaded...

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Back on topic... Interesting no one found the other small change. I will send a CyberClean (www.cyberclean.ch) to whoever finds it first and post here.

There is a new http header: x-mas, that reads:

x-mas: Happy Christmas, have a great 2011!, Happy Christmas, have a great 2011!

Tricky :P

We have been using Aptimize for almost two years now. Even have our case study on their site.

I guess it wasn't the http-header the server's sending then?

I know, but I was more referring to the update to WAX 2.3, which has implemented many of Steve Souders new best performance findings from 2010 (async js etc).

Pages do load quicker for sure, the only down side is because you haven't hard coded in where ad's are positioned on a slightly slower connection the page loads without ad's and gets displayed then 10-20 seconds later everything gets messed up to make room for ad's. I'm sure on a quick connection you wouldn't even notice it but i'm on slowish broadband and it's a bit of a pain.
