LWJCarroll: No thanks I am pro free speech etc.....I wouldnt regard this forum as an open discussion with people free to express their views if this was implimented.....It would just turn into a narrow "in" bunch of groupies......and it shuts down the flow of info from varying view points...Rgds....Laurie

I am all for free speech, except when someone steps on anyone else's rights. People will continue to express their views in posts - but if one person doesn't want to read from that poster than their own personal topic is filtered.

It's not like one user plonking someone will cut that person's speech forever from everyone's view.

Why? Anyone has all right to not read someone else's writing. If someone annoys you when repeating the same thing over and over, then hiding this person's post might be what you need.

As I said, if YOU hide someone's posts, it's not hiding from anyone else's stream, only from yours.

Again: plonking means filtering YOUR view and it's private, not public.

I like the idea. Sometimes I shoot too quickly from the hip, especially when it comes to a few users on here. If I could have them on ignore it would be nice.
That said, it does not affect anybody that does not use it. So I dont see any problem.

The FUG pretty much should put a stop to stepping on other peoples rights. Moderation takes care of the rest. I *do* understand that Plonking only restricts the one persons view, I was referring to TalkieT's suggestion of a public list and I think any list that shames people publicly for having their say no matter how stupid it might be is a step in a direction I personally am against.

Anyways. I've said my bit now.

No one from Geekzone ever said of a public list. Talkiet's suggestion was silly and not considered - I took it as a joke actually.

The way I see it we all have this option mentally equipped to some degree anyway. If this feature would be useful to some people then I have no objections. I certainly would not have an immediate use for it however could conceivably use it in the future.

I think people have raised some valid concerns but I also think they have been reasonably addressed.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

I don't think it should be brought in either.

It would end up confusing, and I already have a small BS filter from being on the internet in general :P

If I read correctly on what Mauricio proposes then for users who choose not to use this feature:
- Ignore the feature - should not be too hard
- Mauricio described plonking in an earlier post
- This is no reason to object to the feature.

Plonk option as I see it.

It is not compulsory, it is optional.
Plonking just hides a chosen posters comments from YOUR personal view.
Only YOU will have the comments YOU choose to block hidden from view.
YOUR Plonk/Ignore preferences in no way affect what anyone else within the thread sees.

Check my first post. There's a link to an explanation. PLONK is basically adding someone to a "killfile" so this person's replies don't show up when you see the discussions. The name "plonk" has been around the Internet since the late 80s when Usenet came around.

Call it "Ignore people I am tired of", "Hide comments from rude poster", "Don't show me replies from people who are constantly wrong".

As said it doesn't affect anyone else's view of the forum, only yours and only if you "plonk" someone.

Right now I don't have a use for it.

Possible unanticipated consequences. You may get potential plonkees multiplying, where now they tend to be dealt with. Btw, for users relying on notifications you will be asked sooner or later to exclude plonked user posts from notification.

If plonking becomes part of geekzone culture I can see myself using it simply because the numbers of undealt with potential plonkees may multiply. More users are generally a good thing over time so I guess that outcome is not all bad.

There should be no reason to object to this feature because its OPTIONAL, furthermore you have no way of telling whether I have someone on ignore or not so you're hardly alienating people.

It's not a difficult concept to grasp and is simply there to benefit those who would rather not see person A's posts in a thread.

I understand what it meant after reading the first post - I didn't know what it meant previously. I still think it is a very esoteric term.

It just seems to me like a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, especially here on geekzone where the vast majority of users aren't plonkers.

It will be be useful to a small group of power users here, but the majority will not use it, and will be only adding to UI clutter.

If implemented, it should be an 'opt-in' feature activated from user profile. Or a subscriber only feature?

A Plonk button implies that that user is a plonker which is not a nice way to refer to anyone. I'm sure we all have made comments on here that we wish we had worded a little differently if only to avoid confusion for the reader. It doesn't make us a plonker when we upset someone to the point of them not wanting to read our posts.

If you do decide to go ahead with this idea, which I doubt is necessary, then call it a "User Filter" button. That way others can use it without implying the user is a plonker. There could be other reasons like too many responses from them so you just want to read what others say with no negativity intended towards the filtered user.

Observation:

The message based Usenet required a lot of quoting and due to the format users became adept at it.

Relatively slow moving single thread web based forums like geekzone - quoting is not used so much.

Killlist users will need to exercise good judgement and may need to use quote more on technical topics to avoid confusion.
