Wob: I would say two "l"s every time - something to do with doubling the consonant after a short vowel sound.

When typed into Word, the spell checker corrects it to two "l"s - good old Microsoft, we can always rely on them!!?!

hmm ... grammar eh ...

what about pronunciation (note NOT proNOUNciation)?

do kiwis care that a cul de sac is not cull dee sack but coo de sah, and buffet is not buff-ert but boo fay and same goes with fillet and etc etc?

Seeing this post is about grammar (and pronunciation was slipped in), gnash is not pronounced g-nash. The g is silent. Have a look in a reputable English dictionary and you will see.
