michaelmurfy:To be perfectly honest your site is more of a portfolio than a blog. Portfolios don't run ads - take a site I run as an example (of which gets millions of hits a month) https://charlimarie.com where this a portfolio, blog etc and she doesn't run, or want ads on it as it could ruin her own self image. My own personal site has no ads or even trackers either and gets for some reason thousands of hits a month according to my server logs.
This is what you call an acceptable personal cost as it may lead to other projects and that is a bigger payment than running ads and potentially ruining your own personal self image.
Geekzone is a large site where ads are required, same with gpforums else they wouldn't exist.
I bet despite your best attempts to get people to whitelist your site (with using blockadblock) you still use an adblocker yourself on the rest of the internet.

Seriously? And after reading it you still think that was a good contributor to this site?
Yes! If you took the time to read mattrix's contributions on GeekZone perhaps you would change your mind, or just read a few of the previous posts in this topic from other members. You didn't have a problem tweeting your thoughts - mattrix is entitled to his, or perhaps you see that differently as well?
Pointless discussion now...

Believe it or not we have a few thousands of posts on a good day and I do try to read as much as I can. Decisions to ban someone don't come lightly and contributions are weighted.
Everyone is entitled to their thoughts and we welcome them here. But being disrespectful, sarcastic and acting in a trollish manner is not what we accept here. There are many people around that have opinions very different than my own. But no one comes here and act in a disrespectful manner without being banned.

I'm now interested in reading his blog, but dont know where to find it.
reading this thread, just from this thread, the ban seems very heavy handed. I hope there is a lot more to it, because otherwise yeah, very heavy handed IMO.
@2tapry you mean his link drops to his own blog?
@PhantomNVD from memory she had these turned off however may have re-enabled them as she has quite a subscriber count now but these are not as offensive as ads on portfolos IMO. She still has direct costs (to me) to run the site and maintain the servers hosting it so honestly don't blame her. At-least when you visit her site you don't get a "Disable your adblock" full-screen popup (which yes, is ironic I say this as we were testing this on Geekzone a few weeks ago however went back to a small banner).
Mattrix has changed his blog a few times and I really don't want to amuse him however would like to cover a few facts quoted from his blog:
I just got "kicked" off Geekzone for what I guess was "winding up the mods"
Well actually he did worse, he was winding up the BDFL which everyone knows is a no-go. Yes, you can joke around but when you bring this to another level and intentionally wind him up about his own site then he has every right to ban you.
It doesn't even have <code> tags!
Hmm - I have used code tags in the past so this is something that maybe is broken right now and we should look at. Remember, Mauricio did a recent rewrite of the way the forum displays posts with depreciating the <frame> tags in favor of something else.
Edit:
Fixed...
And don't even try using it on a phone.
I do so every day... Totally fine actually and quick too.
I didn't see many (if any) other users post actual code or even terminal commands. It's mostly Windows end users asking for support to fix their ISP provided emails (ewww).
No wonder I never saw any young ones asking for help making their LED blink or Scratch character jump. They would be told to buy M$ something, program it with M$ something else, and then accept that it only blinks once every leap year.
The worst part is a lot of them call themselves "Systems Architects". What a joke. Using .NET for everything is not architecture. I true architect would know the latest technologies.
Right, guess he doesn't know that I mostly run Linux and support opensource products among many other members of the communinty? Heck, I wouldn't know where to start if I were to set up an IIS box with ASP.NET but could do it in Mono + Linux anyday... I actually think I have trolled on this point to Mauricio in the past but it comes down to personal preference. Also sorry @billgates for trolling you in the past...
Also, the mods don't seem to actually moderate.
Really? You expect to see all moderation out in the open? Right... I can't even...

ok, read his blog, ban seems appropriate now :)
reven:ok, read his blog, ban seems appropriate now :)
Obviously doesn't even understand it's a completely custom forum and not some OOTB thing like 98% of the forums he obviously wants this to be.
Why would anyone post terminal commands or code? That's what dedicated forums are for. And if people want go make an LED blink or a Scratch character jump, they'd probably go have a look at a Pi forum before here. I know I would. Or just just read a basic Pi tutorial... or ask my daughter (or myself since I have a recent Pi addiction).
And nobody has ever told me to buy anything MS (but when I have, I've been able to reach out to GZ'rs on twitter and get some help with issues).
This is a community, not a be-all-and-end-all source of every programming language ever invented.
At the end of the day, we only ever had one ban that was reversed, in fifteen years.
Nothing else to discuss. The OP had a problem with an annoying ad, I agreed with him and blocked the ad from showing. Everything else was a moot point as not contributing at all. Because of this I am locking this discussion.
