I love Geekzone.

I even love the advertising - which I know is necessary - and have clicked through to advertised sites probably hundreds of times by now. I have been a subscriber but I missed the adverts!

But an advert that overlays the centre of the screen and then autoplays video with a sound track is a step too far for me.

It gave me heart failure and woke up the family.

It was that "Money is bad" bank advert - ANZ I think.

Or is my PC infected with something?

Update:

OK so I discovered two things:

It's a BNZ advert, not ANZ. (hahahahaha I love it when that happens!)

I probably activated the video by mistake by leaving my mouse pointer over an advert while I was reading. I still think that's pretty sucky.

I'm sorry you didn't notice those before. These video ads are the only ones I have allowed on Geekzone because they don't start automatically when loading the page (unlike the ones on Stuff and other large sites).

Actually to start these ads you have to leave the mouse hovering over the square ad, and a progress bar will show up - when the bar is full (I think it's about ten seconds) then the ad will load. Just move the mouse at any time during that counting and the video never loads.

You can be a Subscriber and still watch the ads. Just Edit your Profile and under the Subscriber options tick Browse Geekzone with ads. There you go, no subscriber need miss out on the Geekzone ads. Perhaps you'll want to Subscribe again now.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

PS Is there an option "Browse Geekzone with only technology ads"?

We wish. Some tech companies or ad agencies say you folks are not their target market - believe it or not...
