The quote button is missing from the first post in any thread. Logged in, browser Safari. Same for Chrome, not logged in.

Because people were using it ;)

Seriously, people were quoting the entire topic in the first reply. It just cluttered the whole thing. I asked some people stop doing it, but to no use. So I removed it.

Yeah, that annoys me as well. Only a few repeat offenders involved I think.

If next_post contains entire_previous_post_quoted then remove_quote_from_post would be one solution. So would If user = repeat_quote_offender then remove quote_button.

Neither have the simple elegance of your solution. ; ).

I thought of creating a user flag and removing it from those few repeat offenders. But it's so much faster to just remove it - and saves database access.

Talking about it, I'm happy today. Made two small changes that will save about 40,000 database queries per day. Happy. But not enough to bring back the quote button on topic, yet.

It bugs me too when the whole post is quoted when there is no need.  It can be a bit of a pain at times but I always delete the irrelevant stuff in the quote.

I don't know if it's possible within the Geekzone architecture but one forum I go to does the "Quote" function differently.

You copy the section you wish to quote and in the area above the message box there is a quote button there which puts in the coding for a quote and the copied text is inserted between the quote start and end commands.  It stops the whole post being quoted and cluttering up the thread.

What about a "reply to option" and you can select the person(s) name who has already posted in the thread?

How is this different from typing "@person" then your response ? Can you explain exactly what you have in mind?
