Due to very low usage, us (the mods) have decided to discontinue the #geekzone channel on SynIRC. It'll be gone on Sunday 1 December.

Members are encouraged to start up and move to a new channel, which you can post in this thread.

Thanks to everyone who's participated in it over the years, it's been fun.

Has the overwhelming work involved with running an IRC server and administrating it become too much?

The channel needs an owner. The owner needs to login every few days or the channel is deleted. The owner doesn't have time for that.

I know I'm not much different than the next person but I use IRC heaps and always join the channel, if it was possible could we leave it setup as it is and just change the owner? I really dont want to lose summer and some of the members from there.

perhaps someone can put there hands up.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was some interest.
In fact I could possibly do it.

-ChanServ- Note that any channel which is not used for 35 days
-ChanServ- (i.e. which no user on the channel's access list enters
-ChanServ- for that period of time) will be automatically dropped.

Just add me to the access list, I can count on one hand the seconds I have been disconnected from the channel in the past year.

Both myself and Summer are already on the access list and in the channel effectively all the time. I'll also (at the very least, temporarily) happily take over the ownership if that is acceptable to everyone.

If this is a matter of "Geekzone no longer wishes the channel to use its name" then I would appreciate if this could be stated in the clear, so that those of us that do use the channel can know where we stand.

Cheers,

Dave-PZ

I have owned and run an IRC network for the last 6 years and am happy to host a room for GZ on it.
My network is RebelNet, irc.rebelnet.org

I have no problem with adding the current GZ channel ops ect. Let me know if you wish to use my network and we will get the ball rolling

I own and operate the #nzscanners channel on the same network, and though i'm quiet i'm usually also in #geekzone - it just needs someone to own the channel. It doesn't have to be officially affiliated with Geekzone if they don't want it to...

It's going to be pretty hard not to assume that when the channel shares the exact same name as this site.

It can easily be an unofficial 'fan' channel.

That's a bit like assuming that #Auckland is endorsed by Auckland Council because they have the same name :-)
