I'd like to be able to tag users, say if I wanted an opinion from someone in particular who might not always be around. Basically like facebook. Notification method should be configurable by user: email alerts, alerting in some control panel, or off.

Could it be like Yammer where you use either @name or select from a box?

Perhaps we could put a box with the top ten or twenty users on each forum to chose from?

I don't think a box with top 20 users would be ideal. I thought of this when I was posting a thread about custom roms, there's one user who doesn't post much who knows a bunch and would like to have tagged them. Plus the top 20 users (by total posts, by posts this month, by hits?) may get annoyed with it.

I am not saying to automatically notify the top 20 users. I am saying you have the option of entering @username OR|AND clicking the name in the box. Chances are the most active people are the ones you want to notify and this prevents typo but if you want someone that's not in the box you can still use @username.

Sounds fine, though it's a bit of a busy UI already. Perhaps auto-complete of usernames would be an alternate option?
