I keep running into issues with Geekzone that I don’t understand. My knowledge of anything having to do with networking is pretty limited. I have posted about this before and this post is not a complaint or plea for help, just an attempt to understand better what is going on.

My preferred browser is Opera 12. Lately I have had problems sometimes logging into Geekzone that have something to do with security certificates. I downloaded K-Meleon as an alternate browser just to use with Geekzone. This seems to solve the problem.

Today Opera insisted that Geekzone did not exist at all, even though I was only using HTTP. This is new. I have learned a few things recently so I wondered if the issue could be my DNS server. I tried nslookup to obtain the Geekzone IP address and then tried to use that, but I got a message from Cloudflare that direct access to the site isn’t allowed. So then I tried K-Meleon again and it worked fine. So I tried Opera again and it still insisted that Geekzone didn’t exist. So I carried on with K-Meleon for awhile and then tried Opera once more and everything worked fine and it has ever since. I am using Opera now.

So what is actually happening here? I know my Opera is hopelessly outdated but I have tried modern browsers and I just don’t like any of them. Apart from that, I would like to better understand the nature of the issues I am having with Geekzone, especially since I don’t seem to have them with any other site. I suspect this has something to do with Cloudflare but I don’t really understand it. Can anyone explain to me what all this means?

That was really hard to read, do you think you could use paragraphs next time?

It's probably just that Opera 12 is too old, sorry. The Presto engine and the way it handles SSL/TLS within those builds has been shown to be problematic, especially for sites that are backed by Cloudflare SSL or similarly implemented services. Opera 15 and above was a complete rewrite, and ditched the old engine entirely in favour of Blink.

Difficult to say given the lack of information and the wall of text. Try Chrome. If that doesn't work report back.

Initially I thought it might be something to do with lack of SNI support in Opera which is probably required for Geekzone HTTPS pages going through Cloudflare.
No, just read and Opera 8+ supports it apparently.

Perhaps it hadn't been negotiating TLS versions correctly, perhaps Opera was caching something in regards to DNS which it shouldn't have been

Please - upgrade to Firefox or something and make life easier for yourself :)

Use Firebug for Firefox, or Ctrl + Shift + J on Chrome,  or equivalent tool and see what's actually going on when you try load up the page

my guess would be flaky DNS

I had a problem with both Metservice and Geekzone a while ago.

It ended up that I was still running a Peer Blocking service that had HTTP block turned on.
Unclicked this and all was fine

Embarrased apologies for the wall of text. Sometimes I cut and paste and I forget that my carriage returns don't transfer.

Thanks for the responses. I have tried other browsers, including Firefox and (briefly) Opera 16 and I just don't like the way they 'feel'. I am still looking. I'm not asking for a solution here, though. I just want to understand what is going on. Your responses have given me some insight I didn't have before and that is what I was hoping for.
