After quite a long time running Windows Server 2003 it's time for some refresh here on Geekzone.

The Geekzone server will be upgraded to Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2005, plus other features will be added. For this to happen we will need to proceed with a series of steps involving backup, upgrades, patches, etc.

This work is planned for the 31st October 2007.

Please note that Geekzone may not be available at certain times during that day.

I have to say, installing a pre-release Server product speaks volumes about the quality of it.

Will you be doing an upgrade when it hits RTM?

I look forward to reading a blog post about any 'complications' you may have.  It would be soooo boring if things went smoothly!

We have updated the OS and are now running Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2, but I found problems installing .NET Framework 2.0, a required component for Microsoft SQL 2005.

Because of this I submitted the bug to Microsoft and decided to hold the rest of the migration - actually I had no option.

As soon as this is clear I will go ahead with the rest of the plan (Microsoft SQL 2005 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008). This will be done at a later date.

Didnt Windows Update install .NET 2.0 ? Did you check the optional updates ? Sometimes .NET framework may end up at optional updates. I am sure I had got .NET framework included in the update along with IE7 when I was working earlier with Windows Server.

The problem is not if the update is being offered or not, but with the installation in itself.
