There is a script in the source on each page now that points to "Cookie Consent" by Silktide, link to Silktide website. Apparently it's a script to comply with EU cookie laws. Thought something fishy was going on before I saw this thread and realised it wasn't just me.

I believe in Europe they require these types of warnings on all websites, but don't believe it is a requirement in NZ...yet..it is one of these stupid PC rules? Maybe it is  a requirement for some advertisers?

timmmay: What's up with the new cookies stuff popping up at the bottom of the screen?

Google is making it mandatory for sites using their services to present a cookies choice - or risk being banned. This is due to EU laws and cookies. The alternative would be to block traffic coming from any EU member country.

More information here.

Your browser must accept cookies, otherwise you couldn't log into Geekzone as we need to use a cookie to keep session information.

Nothing change. It's just now clear what is stored in the cookies.

Since when do we fall under EU laws?

Wonder if they will make it a requirement for site that uses Google Analytics. If so, I suspect many sites will just remove it.

It's not for sites based in the EU but with EU-based visitors. This means almost everysite with English content in the world, really.

I don't know the technical side of how cookies work and how you may block them. There's a little red x at the top of my screen with a tool tip that says "This page was prevented from setting cookies." That's all I know.

Cookies are text files in your computer. A website will ask the browser to write something to this file, and later on ask the browser to send the information there - for example we store a cookie with a session information so you can login to Geekzone, etc.

Some Analytics tools will ad a cookie that will be used to track users around a site so owners know how many pages are viewed, how long in each page, etc. But those can't identify you because there's no link between a cookie and a person - only to a browser. Unless of course someone writes a cookie with personal information but this is not available unless you provide this kind of data.
