Threads are often locked with no explanation whatsoever.

I am sure it would help the community if they were informed of the reasons behind the decision. This would help posters to better understand (over time) what is likely to cause that result.

It is usually the original topic having been explored and then conversation deviated to no longer be relevant to the thread title, often with petty namecalling and/or insults.

A read of the last few posts with the FUG in mind and remembering we strive to keep threads on topic would in very near all if not all cases make it pretty obvious.

Also threads are automatically locked if there's no new replies after 30 days of inactivity.

But not always. Also, I do not believe in Off Topic it is even logically possible to lock something for being off topic. Conversations between humans morph and change direction - which seems sort of the point of Off Topic to me at least.

"That's it, we're done." is not a helpful explanation of anything...!

Off topic is not locked for going off topic. Manual lock is usually when thing get out of control.

I think the OP means that he would like to see a final post in any thread that a mod has decided to lock, saying why that thread was locked by the mod. Seems reasonable to me.

It does seem fair enough, though TBH I don't think I've ever seen a thread that was unfairly locked and the reasons for the lock have always been pretty self evident without an explanation...
