Is it time to have the HTTPS discussion again? Hopefully the advertisers have gotten on board now with moving to HTTPS. With Let's Encrypt launching this week and Cloudflare already offering free HTTPS to all customers everything should be encrypted.

You're late. Have you visited http://live.geekzone.co.nz and http://testip.geekzone.co.nz yet?

I have already contacted the last advertiser network we have with no SSL support. Let's Encrypt is not part of the consideration for us as we've already been using SSL-certs for years now.

Why?

SSL for auth and PM's is enough, it's not like private conversation is happening on the forum..

Geekzone works well with SSL, tested this in our test environment. There are two things that needed sorting: advertising revenue could go down by 1/3 (but I am working on replacing the current network holding me back on this) and people who don't use the Geekzone server to upload images, instead using third party servers - those will cause mixed content warning or even block showing the images at all. I don't mind, as there's two very easy ways of using images on Geekzone (copy and paste to editor or upload to the user's gallery) but people just don't seem to "get it".

We are likely to go SSL when I sort the ad stuff.

Also note that our SSL pages (and domains) were already using SPDY, thanks to Cloudflare. From today they're serving HTTP/2 by default with fallback to SPDY if not supported by your browser.

This means these sites are even faster. I'd love to have this speed on the whole of Geekzone - currently profile, gallery and PMs have this.

question why should people use geekzone to upload their images to when they may already use, Flickr, photo-bucket or any of the myriad of other services out there?

Because most of the images aren't on Flickr, most of the other services don't provide a resized image or in the worst case the images may one day disappear (as I've seen happen in old threads).

most other forums i visit resize images from other hosts.

while i can understand that pictures may be lost when on other hosts but ultimately isnt that up to the original poster of the image?

In the past, I have intentionally uploaded images elsewhere because they were being resized here, making them unreadable. Is there now an option to prevent this, such as showing a thumbnail which links to the full image?

First, the best way to make sure your image is readable is to crop around the information you want to be seen. If you take a high resolution screenshot and plonk on a 600 pixels wide image it will be bad.

If you crop around just the bit you want this doesn't happen.

If you can't crop (or don't want to) you can now upload a larger image and there's a link in the gallery that will insert a thumbnail that you can click and will open the full image on a another tab.

I have moved even more pages to HTTPS. Basically everything now except the homepage, content pages and forum pages are on HTTPS.

I have one advertising network that is still not fully HTTPS compliant. These aren't being used in the secure pages. As I mentioned I have to find a replacement for this network or risk a cut of 30% revenue. Working on this though.

Also there's the content from Bill Bennett, that we syndicate from his own blog. This is not served over HTTPS so when we load into Geekzone all the embeded content (images) would trigger a mixed content warning. I am going to work with Bill on this.

Forgive me, but I've never been able to get the copy and paste an image directly into the reply box to work. It usually says there's some kind of forbidden swearword in the base 64 thing.

I don't see the need to upload every image that I want to include in a post on these message boards to GZ. Before long, I might run out of my allocated gallery storage space.

Also, is there any issue with copyright when uploading images that one doesn't own to the GZ servers?
