Something is screwed up with the Captcha. It has never worked right for me but at least it didn't lock me out. Now it has stopped working completely. Whenever I click on a correct answer it fades out and gets replaced with something else. I never get in. Fortunately I am currently using two browsers and one which was already logged in has remained so.

Google has added this recently. If you fail the captcha or it suspects of browser and network activities then it will replace images with new ones until it's satisfied no hots are involved.

OK but it is really annoying. I did finally get in after my post but it took a dozen attempts. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous.

The alternative is to have bots trying to login all the time.

Its worked fine for me whenever I have had to do it, perhaps you are on an IP address with a bad reputation so are getting a more agressive anti-bot one?

I agree it took me about 10 attempts to get in last time. The images kept changing and some were ambiguous.

I appreciate the problem with bots and I know that no-one is going out of their way to annoy people, but I really hate these Captchas. They are an absolute pain in the butt. It was said when they were first introduced that they were 'intelligent' and would learn to recognise regular inloggers over a period of time (or something to that effect, I don't remember the exact phraseology), but this has never, ever been the case with me. Every single time I close down my laptop I have to go through the whole rigmarole again and now it is a hundred times worse with these constantly refreshing images. I am very careful with this #$$@#$ thing, I always double-check before clicking because it irritates me so much and I almost never click the wrong images, but that doesn't make any difference, I still have to go through it multiple times and now it is almost impossible for me to log in. I don't know if it is my ISP or not but I'm not about to change that. This Captcha thing has become an unworkable mechanism and it needs to be improved. At the least, there must be some way to recognise returning members from the same IP address.

Ive just logged out and in 3 times and all I have had to do is put a tick in the box that says I am not a robot. I still think its something at your end doing it. This is just in firefox on windows 10 with no adblock running.

As mentioned it could be your IP address or IP range that has been flagged as "strange behaviour"... Perhaps blame your ISP or other users on your ISP?

Really hard to find out why though.

So it's just me and no-one else? That's typical. My ISP is Netspeed, very small, based in Dunedin. Are you saying that if this happened with VF or Spark that half of your members would have the same issue?

The bottom line for me is that I value Geekzone more than I hate Captcha, but I still think there has to be a better way than this.

I have had that behaviour with the pictures and captchas before when using a very dodgey VPN provider, so that is why I say it is IP reputation based. As soon as I dropped the VPN and went back to my normal connection it was back to the simple tickbox verification.

Previously I found that 2degrees assigned me an IP that was in many blacklists, but I cant recall what that did to the captchas, probably just the straighfoward one with choose pictures with food or something, not the re-curring image swapping one for sure.

I think it depends on the browser, as sometimes I just tick a box. But other times I have to click pictures that have water in them. The one I have to click pictures is always the ipad with safari or chrome. A bit off topic, but anyone else find that using Chrome on the ipad, the forum page crashes when you scroll down the page? Only occurs on an actual topic/tread, and not the homepage. Found it happens all the time on both the iphone and ipad. Doesn't occur in safari.

Nup, I have the same problem - but only here at work (IE11). Drives me completely batty! I already found some of the images ambiguous, but now being stuck waiting for the replacement images to pop up is a real frustration and can take some time to get through - totally got worse over the past few weeks.

Reminds me of the other problem I have with GZ - when reading it on the iPad (using Chrome) the tab so regularly crashes and requires reloading. Tried removing and reinstalling Chrome but still no luck; I don't want to have to go back to Safari! Should I open a separate thread on this issue?

Edit - Doh! I see @mattwnz has reported exactly the same problem with Chrome on the iPad - should have read all posts! So glad it's not just me...

Same here. Maybe if enough complain something can be done.

What browser are you using?

Are you using private mode? Private browsing mode makes the captcha ALWAYS kick in.

EDIT: In fact any type of blocking will raise the likelihood of getting agressive captcha. Blocking advertising in your hosts etc. Browser addons that hide obscure your identity. Antivirus addons that mask your online identity.

I'm sure if you lower your defenses a bit, you will find it smooth sailing, possibly not even see the image selection, just a green tick and continue.

EDIT EDIT:

I cant help but post this again...

At least it isn't me too :) I get it from just normal browsing, and not in private mode (not that I have tried private mode).
