I admit it - I'm thick. But I can't work out how to upload an image.

OK, I should just try it, but if I can't edit the post (which might also happen), I won't be able to undo the posting.

So I'd like to get it right the first time.

Advice would be appreciated :-)

theres a big yellow box under the text area saying

"Select an image to upload and use in your post"

click choose file and there you go.

then copy the link it gives you

and just put that in this textarea.

After you choose a file and click "upload this file" it will open a new tab (or window depending on browser) which then has useful bbcode to embed the uploaded image into your post

I don't know how to make it any easier folks. There' as a link "Upload an image" above the text box and there's a "Select an to upload" below the text box.

Please, no. I hate instructional videos. Especially the nasal-voiced amateur ones on YouTube. If people can't read they don't deserve instructions.

Allow copy&paste image (base64) into the message body.
Add drag&drop image upload (HTML5) to the post page.
Install any number of the TinyMCE image upload plugins.

None of these will solve the actual problem - users don't pay attention to anything AROUND the text area.

When the vast majority of users on a website don't have a problem using the functions of the website, and a very small number do have a problem, the problem is not with the website.

I don't think you have enough mods for that... Time to start up a GeekZone on Wheels business where people can ask for help with things and we can tender to go do it for them :-P

I was actually taking the piss when I started typing this, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea :-) How often do we see "does anyone know a good xyz in the abc region" type posts on here?

As messageboard software goes, this is pretty good and up there with the better MBs I've used over the years.

Probably the worst piece of software I've ever had the misfortune of having to use was JD Edwards enterpriseone. Anyone else suffered under that thing?

There's a certain viability bias in that line of reasoning as you will only hear from the people that can be bothered to post about such issues..

You have to assume that for every request for better image uploading (of which there are many in the GZ sub-forum) there are a number of users who would also benefit from such functionality.

More than likely if it's too hard people wont do it; and the community suffers. Admittedly there's been times I've been about to reply to a post in which a screenshot etc would have been helpful to the OP however haven't had the time to go through the hooplah of saving a file to disk, uploading, copying the code etc so stopped short. If it was as easy as a quick copy+paste then I'm sure more images would get posted for the benefit of more users.

Yes @freitasm doesn't owe us any new features however I would tend to use feedback to consider how UI improvements could make the site more intuitive and thus more engaging rather than simply putting it down to a few inattentive / lazy "customers" - and I don't think any UX engineers would agree that putting the upload button AFTER the post reply button is a good idea (or concatenating it with the extraneous word soup at the top of the Quick Reply box)..

@solutionz to be honest I think you're the only one asking for base64 photo uploads. It is lazy and hard to optimize for mobile and slower connections.

You'll be surprised the amount of posts I came across when this was enabled where a user would paste a massive, uncompressed image suitable for a massive 20 story billboard - worse I was on mobile when I often saw these posts (RIP Data). It was a mess and I am glad to see it gone.

Fully agreed. It's even worse when it's from someone that should know better; a third-party supplier tasked with "prettying up" our site supplied it with a 17 MB JPEG banner image of a road and some hills (which doesn't even appear to be from NZ despite supposedly promoting the local environment).
