I have finally discovered that my RSS reader (Feedreader) is reporting new forum threads but not existing ones that are updated with new posts after I have read them.

So the sequence for any one thread is:

a) new thread created.
b) thread appears in Feedreader.
c) I link through and read the thread as it stands at that instant.

The thread will never appear again in Feedreader.  If I manually read the thread I may find new posts (that I have never seen before) and if I go back to Feedreader there is nothing despite the last update being after the date posted of new posts.

Check with the support - I guess they assign each post a unique id and don't reset it even if the timestamp changes...

Thanks Mauricio but before I raise this with the Feedreader folks can you explicitly confirm that an RSS notiofication is sent with every feed?  TIA.

RSS notification?I don't remember any "RSS notification" in the specs. All feeds are created with a timestamp and timezone as defined in the specs. If the title is the same but the timestamp is different from the previous instance I would consider it a "change" and therefore mark things as unread.

I certainly get the forum items on Newsgator with no problems.
