Hey, would you guys be open to adding a bridge to matrix.org to the Slack channel(s), such that we can use the discussion groups there from a Free and federated network/client?

Is that because you already use a Matrix client?

Yes, I use Matrix extensively. I understand most people don't have an issue using Slack, but I do for reasons ranging from accessibility, and resources, to ideology.

That's what's so cool about the Matrix bridges: they allow those who want to use Slack to continue using Slack, while those who prefer Matrix can use that. We could then even provide an IRC gateway, functionality that Slack axed.

Does it mean you don't have to register with Slack to access the channel?

Exactly. You just need a Matrix account on any available Matrix server, as well as a bridge, though we could just use the public bridge hosted by the folks at matrix.org.

Recently at linux.conf.au we've used Matrix to bridge Slack and IRC which was very handy as some people aren't willing to use the other technology.

I don't get why people use Slack (or god forbid IRC).. Discord is so much better than either.

IRC was good back in the day before Discord or Slack were even things.

Using it these days doesn't make much sense unless you use it for auto downloading linux iso's

Don't get me wrong, I damn near lived on IRC back in the 90's, but that was a long long time ago lol

Part of the charm of Matrix is that there are plenty of integrations (including Discord I believe), so that we don't actually have to agree on which one is objectively better than the lot. Instead, everyone can use what they prefer.
