Discussions over here bought an idea that i'd like to see looked at.

Can we add a button on posts that is a "reply to user"

Rather than quoting the post, it would just start the line with @<their username>

This would save us from the complicated of usernames out there..

What about it starts with either

@<username> (re topic #)
@<username> (re reply #)

and have the topic/reply # link to the appropriate place?

That seems even more appropriate.

More options:

Add a "reply to top level post only" button. Which would mean that you could click that button on a post with lots of deeply nested replies. And it would then only quote the most recent reply, and strip out all of the older replies.

Even better would be the above, but without the need to leave the "quote" and "/quote" BB code in the reply box.  (have the "reply to" box insert the BB code when you click Post. Instead of when you load the "Reply To" page). As this will solve the problem where lots of mobile devices will suddenly delete all remaining text in an input box. If you hold down the backspace key for just a little too long. And/Or the cursor gets too close to the beginning of the text block. And then you have the nightmare of fighting against autoincorrect just to retype the BB code that you never intended to delete.

Heh, don't even get me started on quoting features I'd love here :)

Like if you select text, it offers a popup to say "quote selected text"

multi quote, so you can select multiple replies and then you can then click compose and all the selected posts end up in the editor

In my experience, if quoting properly is even slightly difficult, a lot of people won't bother, but if it's easy enough, even the laziest person will attempt it.

Multi reply and quote selected text would be two features I think would greatly improve the quoting by users, esp mobile.
