I had a bit of a search around, but I couldn't see if anything has been suggested before along this lines, so apologies if I missed it.

Instead of blocking all common "bad words", is a find-and-replace filter a viable option? Not exactly ground-breaking stuff, but might spice up everyday conversation and improve UX.

Most of us that want to swear for emphasis know how to work-around the fookin' thing, so why not try something that might get a bit of a laugh from people? I have been on other forums where they replace something like 'asshat' with 'rear-end-in-a-top-hat'. Even randomize it with a pool of words so, say sh!t could be replaced by excrement, a-brown-pants-moment, Ja-Rules'-latest-album etc

I can understand there are still some phrases that need blocking though (I must admit, "newm!litia" is a new one on me haha). Although we could replace certain racially-insulting phrases with 'I-am-a-bad-person-and-I-should-feel-bad' or 'hurr-durr-different-bad' haha

Good point. I am actually toying with the idea of using the filter only for banned words in a different context.

Different context?

Are you secretly using GZ for ML to track us and compile lists based on key-words we may or may not have used?

Because uhhh..... I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords

Different context as in filtering hate content based on ML services that can score a post on a scale allowing us to be proactive. This means leaving the swearing alone, goddamnit.

If a post is edited, changes need to be clearly identified. It's one thing to add a few line breaks here and there, but changing words is a completely different matter.

Fair point. How is it handled now if a mod edits a post for not following the FUG? Does it come up with a message saying that it has been edited?

I would think a simple message stating that it has been automatically edited for language could be the case.

Although with what the boss man is saying, it sounds like he is thinking 10 steps ahead by moving away from static filters and more into accessing the context language is used in. In which case my suggestion is bloodydamn redundant my goodman.

How does that jive with the NOFX school of thought though...

The user who posted the message sees the same message indicating the post was edited as if they'd edited it themselves. Other users do not see this. The moderators often include a note indicating they edited the post and the reason.

I would not appreciate having my words altered to a word or phrase I wouldn't personally use.
