There have been a couple of instances recently where the OP has told people not to sidetrack "their" thread.

I get that to some extent but IMO threads aren't the OPs to "own" but go where they go, for the entertainment or education of the community. This is especially true for off topic or political threads. It's not the OPs place to say what can or can't be posted, it should be up to the mods.

Maybe I'm off base here but it'd be nice to get some clarification.

Sounds sensible on discussion-like threads in Politics, Off Topic. In more focused sub-forums the rules is not going off-topic but no one should really dictate what someone posts or not, providing is on-topic.

@rikkitic, you might have a different view. It'd be good to get your perspective.

I would think that ultimately @freitasm owns all threads along with the fine folk that work under his delegated authority.

The forums are not a democracy, we're using freitasm's platform for our own benefit. At the end of the day, it's his website, his energy, his rules.

We also need to remember that Geekzone isn't just for active conversation, it's also used by many as a historic Q&A platform.

For users to find this effective, they need to be able to skim-read a thread and find the answer they're after, months (or years) after a thread has been opened and closed.

Or that's my my 2c anyway.

I'd say it's human nature to assume "ownership" of a thread that you've created for a specific purpose, but if it goes off topic, steer it back. Don't dictate or lambast.

It's pretty easy to gently steer a thread back on topic, or simply ask for it to be locked as the answer has been found and the conversation is adding nothing to the topic.

But like others have said. The boss man owns the site. His playground, his rules.

I'm not inclined to trawl through all my old posts to see exactly what I have said in the past, but I don't think I have tried to dictate anything. The final arbiters on any issue are the moderators, ultimately @Freitasm, but people, including me, usually have something in mind when they start a thread on a particular subject, and it can be frustrating when the thread gets hijacked by people having a personal debate. Geekzone is a forum for individual opinion in these kinds of threads, so I will offer my opinion if I feel any thread, but especially one I have started, is being derailed. That is all. It is up to the mods to decide if they want to act on that or not.

Rikkitic, I suspect it may have been the joke thread where you tried steering Trump jokes towards Politics. I sympathize as do many comedians as Trump has blurred the lines between real life and satire so much that the audience don't know whether to laugh or cry.

You have made comments about some general discussion threads you have started, which I understand. It was one of the reasons I started this thread, so we could have the discussion in a non-pressurised way, that didn't cause a confrontation in another thread.

Mauricio also seemed interested in the discussion and I thought you would like to be heard. In my opinion for most threads, outside of the off topic and politics threads, of course the OP should try and keep things OT. For the more discussion related threads I thought it made sense to share our opinions and let the BDFL decide.

Offering opinions is of course why many of us are here😀

Agree. I also don't have a problem as such with those who turn a thread into a dick-measuring contest. Sometimes that can be good entertainment if they are passionate and articulate. But it can be annoying for those who actually want to stay on the subject and I have tried, without any success at all, to persuade such individuals to move their discussions to other threads so the combat can continue without derailing the original thread.

The terms of service you agree to by posting here on Geekzone does not concur. Ultimately you as a poster own your content but license Geekzone to utilise it (a necessity for them to make it available to other viewers). Geekzone owns the platform and lets you use it subject to those terms, which also are the guiding force behind whether it's appropriate to steer a thread.
