I've noticed of late that the forums are taking an age to load the forum page - not the top level, but the actual forum threads themselves.

Tried a couple of threads, an on average take 35-45 seconds to fully load. There is an initial pause of up to 30 seconds as the google ads and feedburner links are loaded, and then the actual forum finally comes into view.

Tried from two locations ( home and work), and a couple of different browsers - Firefox and Opera.

Anyone else noticed this ?

Most other NZ sites load up pretty smartly - just GZ is tardy.

Hmm,, must be an infectious dose of bad karma .... strange though - two different ISP's, different browsers, different times and different locations. Guess I'd better not touch anything else in case it spreads

Sometimes the ad servers, trackers (there are a lot of those) can really slow it down. Logging in (subscribed) makes the pages load in a matter of < 5s even on the current Dial-Up, otherwise it's in excess of 20s.

Also some ad-blockers can actually hinder performance so be wary.

It's very slow for me in Opera as well. The top post loads quickly but the replies can take a long time or not load at all. Works fine in Firefox though.

I have found since coming back after 2 weeks off that with Opera 10 and Sunbelt firewall GZ will no longer load. Something to do with the ads. If I turn off Sunbelt's ad blocker it's OK so I end up turning off the firewall when I want to access GZ. All other websites are fine..

It could be the Air New Zealand ad? It's being served from a third party and either your firewall software doesn't like ads, or your ISP has problem accessing the content.

I have no problems loading the forum pages. Actually in the last week or so we have reduced the page size by about 10%, reduced the script runtime by another much and we are always looking at things to make it faster...

Hmmm. Let's put things in context - I see Ragnor running for the picthforks.

We do a lot of work here to reduce size, improve server performance and overall client speed. Geekzone is actually quite good, getting a score of 70 for the homepage, and 65 for this page.

We use a server side software called RPO to reduce page size, scripts, minify CSS, create CSS sprites (have you looked at the source), thus reducing the number of requests. If we didn't do it then you would have a lot more requests.

According to Analytics only 2% of our visitors use dialup. So I am quite happy with 56 http requests for a webpage to be loaded.

Do you want to see who are the worst offenders? Check this blog post where John Clegg list New Zealand sites by size, Yslow, download times. Or check this spreadsheet to see where Geekzone is in the list.
