You haven't updated the timezone on your profile.

Fine for me.

Hows your PC, Server, Geekzone profile timezone options, or drug intake looking?

:-P

Hey Zippity,

No offence was intended, hence the tongue-out smiley at the end, and the inclusion of the answer to your troubles, as well as two genuine possibilities of alternatives.

Have a nice day.

:-)

I implemented it for a client in classic ASP some years back, what a nightmare.  There are so many different rules, it's really hard to implement.  I don't think we ever got it going 100%.

.net makes it so much easier

The problem is not "changing the time". You can see the "changing the time" is done - as soon as you select a timezone all times on Geekzone are shown like that.

The problem is that who here will keep an eye on all the rules? Each country use different rules, some change rules every year. Some countries even have 50 states and each state a different rule.

Got it? It's not that I wouldn't want to do it. But it's not my business to keep timezone offsets. It's much easier to give a tool that you can select whatever works for you.

"changing the time" ? where'd that come from? Sure, users should select their timezone, but they shouldn't have to say "hey, please adjust me by an hour because it's DST here now". The OS has a table of this data, it *should* be easy to reference that and do DST detection automatically (sorry, *nix coder here, it's trivial there).

The OS has, and indeed it changes. But the timezone is set on your profile as a fixed offset of GMT. So as the OS changes its date automatically, so the time that shows on the page, because it's dependent of two variables  that move out of sync.

For both to move in sync we would have to code timezone rules in the scripts - and that's why I am saying it's not feasible.

Do you know how many countries change timezones from one week or another, when it's convenient? For the U.S. alone we would have to maintain 50 timezones - and expect users to instead of select a timezone select a state.

For New Zealand users we would have to expect them to enter "NEW ZEALAND" as country, when at least 2/3 won't enter any information except for their email addresses.

You miss my point. The OS timezone is irrelevant. Instead of storing the offset, store the *timezone*. Then it's a simple case of using the OS's TZ table to calculate the time of a given forum date (in GMT) in the user's timezone.

New Zealanders would simply select 'Pacific/Auckland', not '+1200' or '+1300', because the OS's table for 'Pacific/Auckland' knows when the change to/from 1200/1300 occurs.

You don't have to maintain any TZ data at all, you rely on the OS copy.
