Using Google Chrome, I now see a lovely white box appearing beside the first post in a thread.

Over there ----->

what is it?

It is an ad box - if you don't see ads, nothing will show up there.

We moved the box from the bottom of the page - to make it more visible and to reduce the length of the page.

Ugh... it wasn't so bad at work with a high resolution wide screen display, but now it really intrudes onto the forum at 1024x768.. Still a valid resolution, sorry :)

It's the wide left hand sidebar that makes it really obvious.

Now before someone mentions it, no, I will not subscribe *just* to be able to turn ads off (noting that that doesn't mean I won't ever subscribe).. for GZ I'd rather not turn ads off anyway, so that impressions still gain income.

There are no more ads. Just moved one position.

Sorry, I realise that. Not complaining about the number, that doesn't bother me. In fact, you could add more (to the bottom of the page) and I wouldn't care. It's just the layout that is bothering me. If it won't be changing, that's fine.. just a shame, I'll live with it.

The idea is that if it performs well enough we could even remove one of the other blocks...

Interesting... which one were you thinking?

Perhaps the bottom one... Still tweaking - at least a week to see any change in performance.

Oh... just occurred to me, how does that ad block behave if someone posts a wide (within reason) image?

For space optimisation, have you considered moving the translate/subscribe/listen live bits of the sidebar elsewhere? they'd work better down the bottom.. this is of course if the feedburner summary can be narrowed by 10-20px.

In our continuous "tweaking" efforts I am trying to "shorten" the length of pages. We could reduce the the number of replies per page, but this would give people more pages to load - with consequent waiting time, etc.

So I am still tweaking the ads. I have changed the ad format at the bottom from leaderboard to a square, and moved it next to the "Related topics" list. This reduced the page by about 200 pixels while keeping the number of ads.

I am currently running a couple of remnant ads there to have a feel of space, load times, return, etc...

Also as part of this I have reduced the forum script by about 5%, and optimized some of the conditions in the logic. This should improve performance even more.

Still a couple of things to change (and fix - I know about the problem of users not being able to delete their own posts and will work on this).

Keep an eye on that space.
