so does that mean the message went through or not?

Yes it was sent... It should read 'Message' instead of 'Error'...

Cheers, for that it was you I sent the message to anyway so you would know, is there somewhere i can view sent messages or received messages, or am i missing something really obvious.

And where you the correct person to speak to about a name change

You have two messages on Geekzone: PM and Friends. Friends are one line only and you can see the message in your public profile link on the menu. The PM is longer and you can send it by clicking the emaill buttons in someone's profile or forum post.
