have run into this lots in the past.  if you "quote" a post, and accidentally delete one of the quote open/close tags you get an error message.  If you're using IE, when you go back you lose all the text you just typed in.  Would be nice if this did a javascript validation (button or ajax based) before switching pages, or if it didnt refresh the page and lose all your changes on hitting teh back button..

have given up on posts several times when this has happened and just not bothered to start again

Wait a minute. You mean you want us to fix things too?

I won't quote you, just in case it eats my post.

Actually, I am having this problem with Firefox on Linux too.. Another problem that's come up is the bottom "Quick Reply" box has started rendering in the wrong place, same thing with Firefox on OSX:

The Quick Reply will render UNDER the related links if the width of the page is not wide enough. I have reduced it a bit more, but you have to use it maximised in a 1024 to be effective.

Personally, I like Invision Board's method.  On the error page, is a textbox with your post in it below a message indicating that the below post should be copied to the clipboard in case your browser clears it when you click back.  It's really awesome.
