We will be testing avatars in our forums, through gravatar.com.

If you want an icon with your avatar to be shown in each of your posts, make sure to head to gravatar.com and register there. You can then upload an image and that will be shown here on Geekzone and other gavatar-enabled forums.

Make sure you register with the same e-mail address used here on Geekzone!

The code is already in the pages... I have mine too. They have a manual process for approval, so we have to wait a day or so.

Registered and uploaded mine.

Its neat that we are getting them and also that we have reasonable limits on the images.

On quite a few forums it gets quite annoying downloading 2mb+ animated gif files that people put on their avatars and signatures - which is where Adblock comes to play.

I doubt we'll have that problem here as this forum seems much more civil and mature.

I agree, there is none of that extra annoying rubbish on GZ that you see on most other forums. I think the plainer look works much better. Though avatars are great. But hopefully its kept at that.

Let's hope it keeps going this way...

this should be fun. 80x80 is good size. adds a bit of personalisation.

The good stuff is that your e-mail address is the key - but it's passed through a MD5 filter so it's hashed and spammers can't grab it.

This way people can post in multiple sites and have a single avatar everywhere. It's a good experiment and way easier than implement one of these things directly here on the forum.

As Disenchanted says, it can make things more personal - the group here is great (even with very diverse opinions sometimes) and everyone deserves to be a bit different.

Yeah, they are taking their time....

One question I was thinking of... was this avatar service is supposed to 'rate' the avatars to a MPAA rating system, what is the 'maximum' permitted here?

As you can see, its not R16 or anything.... but just wondering.

Yes, I think it takes long too... I've posted in their forums. I want to have a feature that did not require lots of changes here, easy to implement, but at the same time "strees free" for users.

Let's see how it goes this week.

What would be required to build an avatar feature in? I know it would take up a bit of web space and add that much more traffic.......

You'd need to write/steal/borrow a lot of logic for uploading avatars, checking the resolution and resizing if nessecary, checking the size, deleting them if a user removes a avatar or changes it, viewing profiles and posts, what to do if the user doesn't have an avatar... etc etc.

If there is a free, easy to use and nonintrusive service which can cut down on the changes - it is easier to take that route rather than writing your own and potentially bugging the forum software. Though it *may* be better in the longrun.

I like to spontaneously change my sig, and would enjoy doing the same with my avatar too... maybe we should start a thread of pledges for Mauricio to spend some time coding it into GZ...

Count me in! And while we are at it....how about skins? I know several forums that allow you to change the skin/theme of the site......just at thought!
