Getting some suggestions from the Geekzone Live thread we have made a small change to our frontpage.

I have removed the Facebook suggestions app from that page, moved the Friends around a bit and made more room for a longer Discussions box.

This box will automatically update itself every ten seconds and open links in a new tab/window (depending on how your browser is configured).

The auto refresh is only enabled for users that are logged in. If you are not logged in you will only see the static page. Also the auto refresh is disabled if you are visiting Geekzone from a mobile browser (we don't want refreshs every few seconds causing your mobile data account going crazy, right?).

If you don't want this automatic update to happen (it will use some bandwidth over time after all), you can change an option in your Personal Profile to disable this.

I'm thinking maybe 10 seconds is a bit to quick?
I mean it can take me over 10 seconds just to read all the forum posts so if it is changing in that time i am going to get really confused.

And what is the need for 10 seconds, surely no one is checking the site that often. Maybe 30 seconds or even a minute would be more sutible?

Brilliant change. Great Stuff. The refresh button will be very glad of a rest here!

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yep, 10 seconds is a bit too low. I will change to one minute...

I assume this is script/ajax based like the 'live' page?
If I have scripts disabled at work, will the request still be made, but its being stopped by the work proxy?

What I am getting at, do I need to close geekzone whenever I am not using it, as all usage is logged at work, and I hardly want IT calling me to tell me I have excessive usage.

I am thinking of adding a personal option to allow you to chose between one or another. I will add this tonight.

Seriously? Something a little more helpful would be nice.
And if I do not log on, how am I meant to ban people? :P

Thanks MF.

The new option is in the Personal Profile now, and I am updating the OP.
