Today it was brought to our attention that a slimy New Zealand-based SEO spam company has been in contact with users, offering a monthly payment if they can get their link into forum signatures.

I'm sad to see a number of users accepted this deal. Those users have now been contacted via PM and warned and/or banned. If you have received a PM about this act immediately. Not responding will incur in a ban.

The FUG is clear and says "Posts will be removed and the user may be banned if: [...] the signature is used for URL drop, mainly for promotion of pyramids, get rich scams, SEO link building and similar."

I'm not going to name and shame, not even give this company a plug here.

Enough to say though that some of the people caught selling space in their forum signature are also the same people blocking ads on Geekzone...

Should we feel unloved and rejected if we didn't get approached. :-)

Yes, some of them. Hypocrisy at its best.

Wow, I'm shocked and amazed at the tactics of some of these "marketing" firms.

And shame on the people using Ad Blockers!

What's wrong with blocking ads if you know you're never EVER going to click on an ad?

*sigh*

This was explained many many many times. There are different ways of charging for an ad.

Some companies book ads per impression (CPM) and pay based on impressions, regardless of clicks or not.

Long version with explanation and links here

Don't get me wrong, I'm just looking for an answer not a debate...and since I haven't been privy to any previous explanations there's no need to sigh, rejoice in bringing new information to light for a weary web traveler  :)

Everytime this is an issue with someone on the forums, we should just ban johnr.  He causes most of the trouble anyway.

Maybe a sigh of contentment? Anyway, this did remind me that I do try and turn ads on occasionally, until the flickering/sliding/wobbly ones get the better of me. So they're on at the moment -- the very first ad I see offers free virus 'scaning' -- *sigh*

Luckily I have this deliciously refreshing SupaCola, it really hits the spot...
