A few months back I floated the idea of having an option to be notified if someone replies to a comment on a blog entry. At that time some said "This is not a forum", etc... But I still think this is an interesting feature. I might introduce it with a configuration switch so each blogger can turn it on or off.

Leaving it on will add the advantage of a higher traffic to your blog, bringing people who is really interested in the conversation back to keep it flowing.

Comments? ideas?

Sometimes you end up in a bit of a back and forth so would be good to be notified...

I am trying to get my head around this "blog" concept and am still confused by this arcane and esoteric art.
Nevertheless I decided to give it a go and tried to post a blog only to get thwarted by the need for a "category" which appears to be a drop down box with no entries and no option (that I have yet discovered) to put something in there!
Now I know I am only a "geek wannabe" but I need some help here...

You create your own categories to appear in the list. Select blog categories from your profile page under blog config.

Yee-arr comments are a great idea, what may be a good idea is if you give blogging subscribers their own topics in the forum and they start their own threads regarding blog posts and the comments will be made there. But i like the comment system on geekzone blogs

Not to be rude at all, but wouldn't having a forum about a blog just be a bit superfluous, as if you're going to just talk about the blog's ideas in a forum, why not just put the ideas in a forum to start with? It really would defeat the purpose of a blog entirely

Which goes against the point of having comments on the blogs. To post a comment people have to sign up on the forums. Also the blogger loses all control over the comments that are posted.

Comments in blogs are very topic related, and focused. Making it part of a forum system is completely out of sync with the idea of blogging.

Hey it was just an idea! I'm fine with the current system anyway. And why cant a blogger moderate his/or her own forum?

You can moderate your own blog. The difference is that on your blog you are the person creating threads, conversations. On a forum anyone can do it - and you don't have control, only the forum's moderators.

You will be able to create your own forums on Geekzone, pretty soon though...

I think that it sounds like a great idea, I know myself when I am browsing around the web, sometimes I will post a comment somewhere, and mean to go back and check it, but because I dont get a notification of a reply i often will forget, then when I think about it i cant remember what the website address is,

or there isnt any comments or anything.

Its also really great for driving the traffic back to the blog, and a fairly common mechanism as well.

as long as people have the option of turning off notifications if they have a profile that should be fine.

I also think the own forum idea is pretty cool too, that way if there is a bunch of crazys who want to have raving arguments on particular topic someone blogs about they can do it there,

also if the forums can be set to eitheur be private only, or publicly accessable I think that would work well too giving people the option of having their own little secret elitist community.

hrmm...

(word to the wise, dont reply to forum post when you have a keystrokes per minute counter visible.)
