I am on 10 GB Vodafone / TelstraClear ADSL Broadband plan / connection.

I am using a Macbook and Firefox to run www.speedtest.net.

My Speedtest.net data is:

Ping: 53ms

Download: 3.86Mbps

Upload: 0.49Mbps

Why is my upload speed so much slower?

Is there anything I can do to improve the Upload speed, even at the expense of some Download speed?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

This is the nature of the technology google/wiki ADSL
A=Asynchronous
Where the downstream is provisioned a smaller portion of the bandwidth.

in saying that, your upload speed does seem to be half of what it could be, master filter installed?

would help if you post real stats out of the router rather than speedtest.net to count out any issues between you, your isp and speedtest.net..

Thanks Dairyxox,

Yes provisioning upload lower then download is reasonable, but is 10 times slower a reasonable setting?

hio77, I am still waiting for RBI. The current 3.86Mbps is lighting fast for me in rural south auckland. Filter is installed. Just trying to understand if the balance between up and down can be adjusted?

The ratio can't be changed. ADSL without annex M will only deliver around 800kbps tops for most users. Annex M increases this to around 2Mbps by sacrificing some downstream but it's not available on any Chorus equipment.

sBiddle, did you mention annex M because there IS some way to get it, even if I am on a Chorus cabinet?

There is no way to get it. I mentioned it because the ADSL standard does support this, but it's not available on your connection.

If you want faster upload look for wireless alternatives, there is probably wireless RBI coverage in your area or at least a wireless provider offering services.

thanks for the explanation sbiddle, unfortunately my mobile coverage barely has 1 bar on Galaxy S3. So no solution there.

That means you'd have no troubles moving to wireless RBI if it's available in your area.

There are also a few options for WISP's up that way.

IF you can get onto the "Slingshot better network" (has to be their equipment and not a Chorus wholesale connection), then you can get Annex M and the faster upload.

Post your sync rates as peter robot suggested.
But otherwise yes, ADSL is asynchronous, max upload on ADSL2 is ~1mbit. ~22mbit download.

RBI is wireless but you won't see it in "mobile coverage". It's delivered to fixed wireless equipment installed in your premises, not to your mobile phone.

Having said that, please read the first reply in this topic, and as many others suggested, post your model DSL stats and if you have a master filter installed.

Hi Maurice, I think I have my answer to the speed difference question. More data will not change that.
But I am interested in your comment about RBI coverage not being evident in my Mobile phone reception. So how do I go about actually checking my RBI coverage. Vodafone promised RBI would arrive in my area last April. Do I need to get a techie to come and check RBI capability at my location?
