hello there. i have a hg556a vodafone router modem which i have had for a year or so. i have just bought a network adapter rated 300 (802.11b/g/n 300M Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter (RT8191 Chipset) however my connection speed is only 54.
i had thiught the modem was at least 150. is there anyone out there that may be able to elaborate further to this.

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- If you are rural or urban

 


 

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Hi,

The HG556a supports 802.11 B/G/N. N is capable of 300 mbp/s but the device isnt as you found out in your case, The capability is 54 Mbp/s.

"You MUST use WPA2 authentication with AES encryption only, or use no security at all if you wish to achieve N rates. Anything else is against the N spec and typically results in the client falling back to G rates."
