Does my connection speeds sound right to you?

Living a bit more rural we found out that its a mini exchange, and as more people got connected then we noticed the congestion and speeds dropping.

However early mornings we could get over 5Mbps+ and during the day around 3Mbps, and lower at nights it would be 1.5-2Mbps.  Something we just got used to living with.

Last week due to road works taking place they dug up the line so we lost connection for almost a week.  It got repaired but now all we can get is 0.5-1Mbps and this is ALL the time, no matter how early I get up to test it it will never go over 1Mbps.

Contacted Vodafone who logged a fault but Chorus has come back and the response is, that its due to congestion so there is nothing wrong.

Seriously????

Just seems since the repair its capped or something or something related to the repair work??

Any options I can take, otherwise I'm going to sign up to another providers wireless service and at least get something half decent.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

What's your location? It can depend on where "a bit more rural" is specifically.

You can PM your details to me so I can confirm, but it sounds like you're on a Conklin. Sorry, but it really is working as intended. :( Wireless might be your best option in the end. is RBI available in your area?

Mini exchange has very limited back haul and will be ASDL1 so correct will be due to congestion and will impact all connections on the hardware no matter what ISP the end user is with,

Approx where are you located?

Its definitely a mini exchange as I went through the speed issue some time ago with Vodafone so understand the congestion problem, hence we managed to live with it.

It just seems such a coincidence that I was able to get over 5Mbps before in the mornings, and straight after the repair work to the line I can only get 0.8-1Mbps ALL hours now.  I just expected even with the congestion it wold be similar to before or that early hours I would still get better speeds than I am now experiencing.

I'll be going wireless now as it really appears to be the only option.

What is your sync rate?

It wouldn't surprise me if Conklin congestion nationwide has got exponentially worse with the launch by everybody on unlimited plans. BUBA connections should be charged different to EUBA because they simply aren't capable of coping with these.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

A speedtest means absolutely nothing. All that's relevant right now if your DSL sync stats.

Thats a speedtest result. The people who are trying to help you need to seen the synchronisation rate and other stats ( like attenuation) that your modem reports. If you can't find these, post your modem model and someone will tell you how to get the stats. Alternatively PM (email button) one of the friendly Vodafone people here, like Demeter or TimA, and I am sure they will look into things for you.

Yep, that's them. Something looks wrong with the line to me as with 31.5 dB attenuation you should be syncing higher than that. The upstream attenuation looks really high too. Are there any problems with the voice side of your line since it was 'fixed'?
