Hey all,

I'm considering a change from my current ISP to Voda to take advantage of the Cable network that is allegedly in my area.
Upon making my phone call which had a pretty quick response during the day, I'm told both yes, I can, and no, I can't, and also told that I can but it'd be complex.

I'm really looking for some solid answers as to the availability of service in my area, which I could only imagine could be answered by a staffer is they're around? (hint hint :) )

Also, can anyone speak to the install process with Downer EDI for a underground Telstra cable? I'm very excited about the idea of better speeds, but the fact that I'm in a rental could seriously hold things up, particularly if there's trenching involved.

Cheers for any feedback you guys have in advance!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

The only 100% answer to if you can get cable services is for Vodafone to send a Downer Tech out.

No one over the phone will be able to tell you if your install will be 'complex' without visiting the site.

Best option is to begin the sign up process and let VF send someone out for the install. Worst case you can't connect and it's cancled

As much as I hate to say it, you're probably right in saying that'll be the most reliable way to get a 100% clear answer. I'm sure you can understand it's frustrating when I get 3 different representatives telling me different things.

  1. How far away from the road are you? (Long distances make for more difficult installs since there is significant loss per metre in the cable. 50m or less is considered straightforward)
  2. Can you see the cable on nearby poles, or are there nearby houses that you know have cable? If you are bracketed by houses with service, the odds are very good that you can get service too.

Hey - To answer your questions:
1. The house hold itself is less than 10m from the boundary of the street.
2. There is no nearby overhead cabling, and when I called there was mention of something called an "underground drop required". This is why they mentioned trenching etc to me and possibly why I got a no the first time I asked.

OK then, sounds like the best course is to begin the sign-up...

Is there a green box on the footpath of your house or your neighbors?

@Yabanize - Yep, sure is, they're all the way down the street.

I've bit the bullet and gone ahead with a signup after being told that the initial visit is just for a scoping only. If the install goes anywhere I'll use this as a log of what happens. :)

If you are renting, surely asking your landlord should be pretty high on the list of things to do as it's their decision whether trenches dug etc.

Absolutely. Voda indicated to me that they won't know if the service is possible until scope is completed and they couldn't speak to the physical work being done or the plan for it until the scope is done, so I have to sign up and go through the motions, then contact the landlord.

Seeing as it's no obligation until the service is working, I see no problem forthcoming.
