I want a phone that will sync with Mac and will have "live" email and ideally calendar and contact info whilst I am away from my office and home. Some web access and multi-media would be great too.

Obviously, an iPhone is the no-brainer choice.

However, there must be alternatives. I know that iSync will sync the N95 with Mac but not I think Mobile Me. I assume that MM will only work properly with an iPhone?

Anyone like to offer alternatives for those who don't want to follow the herd over the iPhone cliff?

I am on VF at present but would move to Telecom when they get 3G if need be.

I hear HTC is at last coming to New Zealand through Vodafone... I am currently using a HTC Touch Diamond, but I really think the HTC Touch Diamond Pro is something to look at, mainly because of the slider keyboard.

I am using HTC Touch Cruise atm and I find it really nice, except that I need to wait for Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade

Telecom has had 3G for going on 8 years - well before Vodafone New Zealand. By all accounts, Telecoms 3G coverage is much better as well.

Your getting your terminology confused. Telecom are launching a GSM network in november that will support the iphone among hundreds of other phones (the currently have a WCDMA network). Telecom has had 3G for some time on there exsisting network, and the new network will be a 3G network as well.

Ah; thanks! i have never come across anything other than GSM, so it's all Dutch to me....! Doesn't that make Telecom about 10 years behind the times if they are only just adopting GSM? I am sure that the first mobile I ever had in about 1992 (in the UK) was GSM!

You are getting it confused.

Telecom currently runs a CDMA 1x network. Vodafone runs GSM and WCDMA networks.

Telecom is deploying a new network with support for GSM (GPRS+EDGE) and WCDMA, but in different bands thn Vodafone.

WCDMA is not the same as CDMA.

Let us get simple: Which network will be the best (performance) over say the next 2 years?

Telecoms current cdma network, better speeds on and off 3g, and better around the whopwhops coverage, and ok building penetration when your in the city.

Vodafone seem to have put coverage into some places around the city, but loads of indoor is gsm only, which only gives you gprs speeds.

Vodafone's 3G is faster than Telecoms EV-DO. Don't even get me started on Vodafone's HSDPA and soon HSPA. The problem is 3G coverage. You'll only get it in main urban areas but this will cease to be a problem when the 900mhz HSDPA network is launched. It will obliterate Telecom's mobile data offering.

I have to be honest though Geektastic, based on what you've said, either supplier will suit your needs just fine. Base your decision on the type of handset and the plans available. Also, you may wish to wait until Telecom launches their new network as you'll have a larger supply of handsets to choose from which are capable of proper international roaming. Also note there is supposed to be a new carrier (NZ Communications) launching towards the end of this year.

WCDMA is slower than CDMA EVDO Rev 0 according to specs.
HSDPA is faster than CDMA EVDO Rev A according to specs.

In real life? CDMA EVDO Rev 0 is much faster than WCDMA. HSDPA should be faster but the experience I had using the vodem and the XU Express Card is just about the same as the CDMA EVDO Rev A.

When can I expect that to be available from VF here? It's the first thing for a while that I've liked the look of.

I'm under pressure from work to dump my Treo 700wx on telecom and accept a company VF. I've stalled for months as I am holding out for new hardware to be made available that I like. (Why change and get the same year old technology right?) Sync, push mail, outlook, web browsing, touch screen, ect, ect is all want! haha

Also is there any indication on prices?

SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WATCHING!
