Can anyone explain how wi-fi calling works on VF while roaming? If I turn on Airplane mode before landing in another country, connect to WiFi, will I get $8/day roaming charge for making & reeving calls, sending & receiving text message, assuming I'm on a monthly plan?

No, In my understanding WIFI calling doesn't trigger roaming, only if you use another cell network O/seas to use data or send txt or make calls

Thanks that's what my understanding is, hoping that someone from VF can confirm. @MaxineN

This is the answer.

Airplane Mode + WiFi on whilst roaming will trigger WiFi Calling as if you're in NZ. The moment you turn off WiFi and/or leave WiFi Network $8 daily roaming will trip.

Thanks @MaxineN, moment I turn off Wifi and also Airplane mode right? This is regardless of the plan I am on, could be a corporate plan right?

If you connect to roaming network, if you make a call, receive a call, send a text or turn on mobile data $8 daily roaming will trigger. However having WiFi on and Airplane mode and connected to any WiFi network, WiFi calling will kick in as if you're in NZ. Regardless of the postpay plan.

Hope this helps!

WiFi calling turned on in settings?

Tried forcing airplane mode as well?

What handset are we running too?

@quebec The airport could of blocked it - VodafoneNZ has zero control over this

You need to try another WiFi provider

Not 100% true as I was recently overseas and also had this query prior to my trip, to which @nickR1 assisted with.

I also thought the moment I connect to the roaming network, the $8 a day would trip - this aspect is not true. My sim was on 24/7, and phone not in Airplane mode as I had a local sim as well. I was in and out of wifi networks throughout each day. I did not get charged for just leaving the sim to connect to the local roaming network. I even received texts from NZ, without being charged. Data was off though and I made sure to not text or call while connected to the roaming network.

I think the $8 would trip once the user makes a call or text, but not for merely connecting to the network.

That should not have happened. Just spoke with Nick about it and the outcome as well.

🤔

I'm going to ask for the absolute rules and some feedback. Will get a much clearer picture.

WiFi Calling requires the handset to establish an IPSec Tunnel

If ESP traffic is blocked on the WiFi network you are connected to then WiFi calling wont work

I can attest to not getting charged either while overseas on VF prepay plan. Iphone not in airplane mode, data roaming off and received texts but did not send texts or receive/start calls and no charge.

I didn’t use wifi calling but now that I know it’s no charge I’ll keep it in mind when travelling.

I've come back with some more information after speaking to someone who's more in the know and it was what I thought minus one detail.

If you make a call(even to voice mail), accept a call, outgoing text or picture or start a data session, you will get charged $8 daily roaming.

The exception to the rule is when we call you from the call center, you get a call but do not answer/choose to decline and receiving texts.

Should not be tripping just for merely connecting to roaming network. Quite odd.

Prepay Roaming is different vs On Account.
