I was checking out a friends broadband problem today. Sometimes his adsl connection is average (5Mb/s), and then other times it flakes at about 1Mb/s.

Today he complained of slowness so we did some tests with speed net and the vodafone speed test meter.

At best he got 5Mb/s down and about 0.1Mb/s up. The same test run several times over a few minutes resulted in some quite extreme differences, it went as low as 1Mb/s and 0.05Mb/s up.

The SNR Margin is quite good at 14/15, and the attenuation seems ridiculously low at 0.8/3.5? Is that attenuation for real?

Of 1000 pings they have 1% loss (acceptable?).

I am thinking the modem or maybe filter is screwed. Its a old Billion modem.

Any other thoughts?

Unplug all devices connected into all jack points throughout the house.

Connect the modem directly into the main jack point without the filter.

Run speed tests again. If there is still a problem then at least you have eliminated the filter or any other hardware connected to your line in your house as the cause (apart form the modem itself), in which case you should now contact your ISP and get them to do a line test.

Are you saying the line adsl sync speed in the modem is changing significantly every reboot/reconnection or that speedtest.net and the vodafone test are giving different results at different times?

The results of speedtest and vodafone, run sequentially (not simulataneous of course) are very close.

What worries me is several tests, done on either site, over the course of say 10 minutes, gives a huge range in the difference in result, ie 5Mb/s down one minute then 1Mb/s down the next.

I would do the isolation style test Simon14 mentions and if possible try a different spare modem over there.

If you don't have a different modem you can try you can always get a cheap Dynalink off tradme for <$20
