Got changed over to the Red Network this morning. Could not get a connection until I entered in the DNS settings into TCP/IP.
It does not work if I enter them into the modem itself which is bizarre.
And more bizarre why do I suddenly need to specify the DNS servers now when I doidn't need to before?

Also, related or not? The phone rings OK but not with it's normal ring, it does a kind of long drawn out ringgggggg ring ring ringgggggggg thing now. Weird. And there's an echo I can hear myself......None of this happened until the swtich over happened this morning. Normal or something faulty?

This is driving me crazy. I want tyo know WHY this is necessary since they swapped me.
I cannot ask Vodafone because no matter who or where I ring they transfer me to the Call Centre tech support lot who persist in going on about how to enter the server settings. No-One can explain to me WHY.

I go round and round in circles.

Not sure about the phone ring, someone else might know.

However with the DNS issue, when your computer is set to obtain automatically it gets it's settings from the modem/router. In the modem/router this should normally be set to get them automatically from the ISP but it may be set to fixed values.

I would login to your modem's admin ui and check if the DNS statically set to your old ISP's dns servers rather than set to obtain automatically.

If the modem/router is set to obtain automatically and not working properly, you could statically set your ISP dns servers in there.

Actually, looking at the Asus support page for the WL-600G there is a firmware update from 2010 which mentions fixing dns relay, so you might want to update the firmware on the modem/router.

Thanks to Brett in some mysterious tech dept of Voadfone that finally I got transferred to. At last, someone who understands...........

I can live with odd phone ringing, it doesn't cause a problem in any way I can see..............

Yes, but that isn't the issue, I did get that firmware but it was a waste of time.

Ok now I'm annoyed. After not being transferred to this in the first place, not getting caller ID enabled, having to insist they hadn't enabled it at the exchange, getting that sorted, getting switched to the Red Network now I find loads of things don't work.

Caller ID - again - bet they didn't enable it again.

Phone ring - well it works, it's just non-standard, not really much of an issue
Services - such as 137 for instance, don't work
DNS resolving on my lovely ASUS wifi modem. Now that I tested properly, went over had plugged it in to my sons Orcon network, using his login. And oh look, it resolves DNS just fine, it just won't on the Red Network..

Trying to explain that to them before took forever and 15 calls - where I got put to the helpdesk going round and round in circles while they tried to tell me how to enter the DNS server settings, phoning back to ask for SOMEONE who understands what I'm trying to tell them.

Eventually I got Brett in not the helpdesk who did, but said I had to get the helpdesk to log it, and of course they wouldn't.  So now I'll have to ring Brett back.  Because there network system is screwed as far as I'm concerned.

Nice to have 14Mbps but not at the expense of losing all sorts of other things. And especially the annoying DNS issue. No-one elses network I have to specify them except Red Network. They will blame the modem, but no, sorry, it likes Telecom and it likes Orcon.
