Hi,

I've been with TCL for about 11 years and until about 6 months ago was happy with the service. I play WoW a lot and recently the latency to Los Angeles has been hitting around 310 ms, which was trying my patience (it used to be 180-220). After some recommendations from friends, I just switched to Xnet today.

Unfortunately, it's been terrible so far. About two minutes after changing my modem's authentication settings, the connection completely dropped out. After rebooting the modem I logged into WoW and was disappointed to find that the latency was sitting up at almost 380 ms. After maybe 10 minutes of use, I found that HTTP seemed to have "frozen"; I could still play WoW and use MSN but could not access any sites. A minute or two later it came back to life but was very slow (it's even failed to load some of the CSS here on Geekzone). It appears to have frozen up again while I've been typing this but will presumably come back again (otherwise I applaud you for being able to read this post!)

Surely this can't be normal, so I'm wondering whether there might be something I've done wrong, or maybe a setting I've forgotten to change. I've removed the Clear DNS entries from my router and have rebooted all equipment/computers. Is there anything that springs to mind?

Usual questons... Have you tried unplugging all other devices and leave only the modem connected? Are you using correct filters? Are the filters in the right places?

I am sure other people will give you more stuff to think about...

WoW seems to have stabilised at about 230 ms now, which I'm happy with. I may have logged in during a bit of server lag. However, the browsing is still not working right, it'll work for a little while then freeze up or tell me that I have no connection.

Edit: Just saw your post, Mauricio. The wiring and equipment hasn't changed it all (I should've mentioned that the TCL connection was DSL) so the filters etc are still all in the right places. I haven't tried connecting directly to the modem with everything else unplugged, it's in the garage so that's a bit of a pain but I'll give it a go if there aren't any other tips.

It's not connecting directly to the modem but disconnecting EVERYTHING but the modem - cordless phones, corded phones, fax machines, etc. This is to make sure none of these other equipment creates interference.

Yeah, I realised that after I posted but I was too lazy to edit it :P

As is typical with technology, it's actually started behaving itself now that I've complained about it. I guess it's possible that I was a little premature and maybe Xnet hadn't quite finished provisioning my line or something. I'll keep you posted.

Ugh, it's doing it again. The modem is now connected directly to the line, and for good measure my computer is also now connected directly to the modem. Let's see how this goes.

And John, no, 310 ms is not great. It's about 50% more than what I'm used to and is very noticeable when trying to play.

Edit: Hmm, it's still doing it, even with this direct connection on both sides of the modem. I'm at a bit of a loss!

Keep in mind the school holidays started and it is raining...
Perhaps a fault with the port at the exchange.

Having other devices connected to your modem doesn't matter...

So you have your modem plugged directly into the phone jack?? Without a filter??? And have you disconnected every other device in all other phone jacks throughout your house? Including Sky and fax machines???

When I played WoW, around 300ms was normal - that was on IHUG, Xnet, Orcon, didnt seem to matter who I went with.

Its one of those things you have to live with unless Blizzard get a "local" server running (insert Tui ad).

DNS issues on xnet are common. Been ages they have known about it and nothing happens. See it on 3 connections I deal with often.

That would probably be why your web was all funny since the dns redirectors in routers seem to be worse effected than having the PC configured with the xnet DNS servers directly./

Right. The issues I'm having do indeed look like DNS problems, and I'm surprised that I hadn't heard about this before since it seems to be such a major issue. I spent ages trawling through all my settings thinking that I must still have TCL's DNS servers in there somewhere!

I'll hardcode the Xnet DNS servers in the meantime, unless there are some others that you can recommend.

Most of the time i recommend using OpenDNS's Servers - they seem to be very reliable.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Try that out.. it won't cost you anything - but might help fix the problem.

I have Xnet's servers set on my PC at the moment and will try OpenDNS if I have more trouble.

johnr: 310ms to the US is great

Really? I'd be pretty annoyed with that tbh.

When doing a tracert to us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com now, im getting 140ms on the last available hop 12.129.193.246 (since the actual server isnt responding to icmp ping). ISP is telstraclear adsl.

140 to that hop here on slingshot as well.

Now what will happen when you actually start to use it with slingshot is another matter. Cable to the flatmates router isnt in at the moment so I cant see how it goes on his xnet connection to compare.
