Is it possible to get just a static IP by itself, without having the internet pack?

$20 a month is justified for the extra services you get (hosting & email addresses) but these are of no use to me - I just want the static IP.

Would be nice to have a similar price point of WxC - $10 a month just for the static ip.

Why do they really need to charge for just a static IP? Most broadband customers have an IP assigned constantly anyway (Who turns their broadband modem off?)

Can you using dynamic dns instead of a static ip?

Lots of routers actually have a ddns client built in to update the hostname whenever the ip address changes.

with APNIC being out of IPv4's, static v4's won't be cheap!
Ask your ISP for a /56 of v6 instead. ;)

If you are with any ordinary ISP they still have IP's to hand out dynamically, so I personally can't see a problem with allocating static IP's.

Only downside I can see with static IPs is there is a management overhead. Ask them for some IPv6 maybe?

It is possible to get a static IP by itself without the internet pack. It is not cheaper.

I don't have anything but individual speculation on the reasoning around the price. I'll keep quiet on my guesses least they be taken as fact.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Taken from a thread that I was corrected in, back in 2007, from the ever wise PenultimateHop:

PenultimateHop: ISPs have to justify and document their IP address usage to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which for this region is [url=http://www.apnic.net]APNIC[/url]. This includes documenting static IP address assignments; and why those assignments are there. Without accurate documentation and constrained IP assignment, an ISP may face the possibility of having their next IP address request rejected.

Thus, many charge a fee to cover:
    - Admin time in setting up and managing that static IP;
    - The fact that they are now reserving an IP address 100% for you, no matter what;
    - Covering the engineering time to support static IP services, which can be incredibly expensive depending on the network topology;
    - and finally, to act as discouragement from needless address waste.

My static IP is free, had it for almost 3 years at no charge.
The option of more than one IP would be good and then I wouldn't mind paying.

No, I just have a good ISP, one that cares about the people not profit ;)
Well not so true, they like profit too.
Not sure how it works now as they have changed their plans but it used to be from X plan and above that the static IP is free.
