Checking out the new plans I saw the following...
I'm on a contact and want to switch to a new plan - "even if you're within your contract term it may not cost you anything to change from your existing plan to a new one" - okay I took the bait and rung to ask I'm 13 months into my current contract. Apparently it would still cost me $150 to "re-sign". So I asked in what circumstances would it not cost me to change my plan.... and gee this is going to surprise you..."sorry I don't know these are only new plans and I am not sure.... I HATE THAT!! No sorry I am not sure but will find out for you etc. I mus have been expecting too much :(
You call customer services to get answers.................disappointing!

depends if you want to resign (i.e. start a new contract and get a subsidy) or continue with existing contract and just change plans within that contract.

If the former, then probably you can't do it until 3 months or less to go on your contract.
If the latter, then I beleive you can do it anytime provided the plan you want to switch to is at least as expensive as your old one.

to get a better understanding of how it works when migrating to an equal value smart plan, click the business link below and then click change to a new smart plan button.

it lets you know if it will cost to change plan. it is the same for personal plans too. As I understand it, if you change the plan type to one of equal or more expensive value, then there will be no cost. Your terms will just get transferred. If you are moving from an iphone or old smart plan, then it will cost nothing to downgrade first to the lowest plan tier before migrating if you have completed at least 6 months of your contract. That way you can move to any new smart plan without penality.

Definitely looking at the subsidy - I have a nexus one (my third) that is having issues and we are out of warranty so looking at options. No immediate hurry but thought I would check out my options. Currently on the personal plans as they were better than the business options. I am a typical accountant and business owners I want to run the numbers and sort out the best deal. Hence why I wanted to see if there was any cost to re-sign etc. And it was all to painful!
Thanks for the link! I hadn't even looked at the business plans thinking they would be ridiculous but there aren't too bad!

On the website it says the old iphone and smart plans are retired so won't be able to downgrade. I think you have to transfer to the new smart plans.

I spoke to a more helpful customer service person today.  He basically said if you change to an equivalent value plan there will be no charge to switch.  But if you downgrade plan then here may be some charge.  I do like the flexibiltiy of terms in the new plans, month, 12 months and 24 months - think that part is great.  Just torn switch and get massive increase in the amount of call minutes and lose the data on my current plan ...
