Lots of residential grade routers that are more than a year or so old won't cope routing 100Mbps.

Anybody upgrading to this service needs to factor in the possible purchase of a new router as well.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear.
I don't blame Telstraclear for the problems I had, that was clearly my router and its settings.

While they are only responsible for making sure the "network works to the modem" by connecting it to the PC he was going to leave with my network/internet in a state less than functional than before (no wifi for mobiles or laptops and no switch for the other PC's and consoles in the house)

Once my partner told him that it was not acceptable (she had work to do involving the internet)he hooked the router back up and everything was working.

My main issue though was that he seemed to get angry because my partner did not want to perform some basic tasks, I tried to avoid this when I was booking a time for install by leaving my work number as the number for the installer to contact but somehow that was lost in the system.

Overall though, these are minor gripes and the install was done on time and in a reasonable time.

In case someone does need to buy a new router the DIR-685 I am using although reasonably old seems to do the job well, it has gigabit WAN/LAN, rates fairly high on the Smallnetbuilder.com router charts and can be found for ~$130.

If I could recommend a router id totally recommend this one

http://www.gowifi.co.nz/access-points-802.11/mikrotik-routerboard-rb751g-2hnd-gigabit-wireless-router.html

They are not 'straight forward' to set up but the performance and features on one of these things would rival a high end router.  And it's gigabit with 1000mw  802.11n draft wifi!

My one absolutely blows the pants off the old d-link DIR300 I swapped it out with

The guy seemed a little lost while setting up my system, initially bypassing the router because it looked too advanced and he didnt know how to work it. The router is a DIR-685 and while it does look flashy it works like most other routers by logging into it via a webpage (which I left the IP and login details on the desk)

as a install tech we can't touch a customers router if they ask us to set it up.
if something goes wrong with the router then the customer comes on here for a cry we get in the crap. plus its not a telstra product so we shouldn't be touching it,  we can stand behind someone and guide them through the process tho. i allways bypass the router then get the customer to set up wireless unless its a telstra provided router

I have just had the Tech round today and was told that my speed would increase to 100 mbps between 8 and 9 pm tonight- I was averaging about 18-19 mbps beforehand and am now only getting 27mbps...using the latest Airport Extreme from Apple as the router, which claims to have a download capable speed of between 300mpbs and 1000mbps- I am on the phone to TCL now to try and resolve the issue, but have been in a queue for nearly an hour...anyone have any ideas or similar experiences since the upgrade? Thanks!

After having been in a queue for well over an hour, the tech was unable to help as they are not trained in the new modems?! Download is still nowhere near where it should be......they have logged a fault, but I have to email my download speeds in the next 48 hours to a clear.net address for them to assess.....not great really

SKL, on your Extreme Airport, have you got other wifi devices that would drag the N networking back to G or B?

I'm finding, after testing, short of forcing it to N olny and shortchanging all my G wifi devices( phones etc).

Likewise, unless you're the only 2.4GHz wifi network in range, you might also be competing for rf space.

Have you done a speedtest from one of the GE wired ports?  That might give you a more 'fair' idea of what you can get, at least across TCL's network.

Ordered my upgrade today @ lunchtime, by walking down to the store (WLG), where it was written up straight away.
was faster to walk there & back than waiting for the "right dept" to pick up the phone.

Second line, t-box, package upgrade, Warp 150

Still waiting for call on install date.

Hi Doomlord- I only have iPhone 4, 4 S and a latest MacBook connected and don't have any neighbours' wifi in range- will try a direct cable today....The Telstra tech tested the connection when he was here and was getting the same speed as I was before- up to 20mbps- it was supposed to change between 7-8 pm but it only increased marginally- even after reset?

Around 30Mbps is typical 2.4GHz performance of an Airport Extreme in my testing of them. In a noisy environment you'll see this drop to around 20Mbps.

You should never run speed test on wireless networks - you have no idea how much interference there is around. Only valid numbers are from wired connections.

If you don't run a speedtest how do you know if it is working properly? You need to be aware that there are a lot more factors that can affect a wireless connection as opposed to a wired connection.

My point is that if you get low readings on wireless connections you can't blame on the provider alone, unless you are inside a lab where there's no interference from other networks, cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc...
