I received a great reply from a vodafone tech who confirmed that my node in particular was suspected of congestion and that work was underway to to resolve this in the next few months.

Not as quick as I'd like but at least the congestion on my node has been acknowledged.

I'll keep an eye on it over the next few months and see how it goes.

@johnr - is there somewhere that details what work has been done. Appreciate that you can't say when stuff will be done, but would be good to see a list of things that *have* been done?

Ugh, it's really bad tonight. I'm even seeing buffering on lower resolutions like 1080p. :\

Tonight was supposed to be a nice, relaxing night. I went out and grabbed a pizza, curled into my recliner, and just wanted to watch some Orange is the New Black. But apparently the connection's inconsistent performance makes that far more of a chore than it should be.

The speed test doesn't *look* bad, but it's fluctuating quite heavily, and the latency is pretty poor too. Completely unacceptable for what's advertised as 130 Mbps.

I truly, desperately hope that these upgrades are nearing completion. Things are continuing to get worse before they get better.

At the rate things seem to be declining, how long will it be before 12 Mbps ADSL2 begins to look attractive again? >_> Yes, this post is a bunch of fluff, but I really just needed to let off some steam and vent my frustration. We started seeing problems before the beginning of the year, and now - almost half-way through the year - we're still not seeing any concrete evidence of the problems being personally resolved for our own connections that we're forking over good money for.

It's beginning to feel like I'm using an ISP in the United States again.

It should not take a few months as a load of work has been brought forward

Where are you?

I have had the same problem last month, but speeds have improved this week.

Getting 98/10Mbps right now on the Wellington VF server.

Looks like we may be due to "upgrade" back to the old 12 Mbps ADSL2 connection. Netflix is pretty much unusable. YouTube is painful. Flatmates are complaining.

I wonder if it's the Steam sale that made this congestion even worse. The connection took a huge hit when Netflix rolled out, but it's never been this bad before.

Also, is there any way to request a partial refund for these constant problems? I really don't think it's fair to pay so much money for a connection that's not performing anywhere near advertised during peak hours.

*EDIT: Looks like it'll continue to degrade before it improves. Even basic Internet use is becoming a chore at this point.

Yeah, same for me in Arakura. I think what's making me furious is it is now NEVER full speed anymore. Best is mediocre, worst is appalling.

Spent 50 minutes on hold today to cancel my install this weekend.  That was painful, and probably a sign.

Kodiack: you can call and ask, but the SLA of your connection is "best effort", so no speed is guaranteed (as has been said in this thread quite a few times). I would call and log a fault with them in the first instance.

Forget ADSL. Dial-up's starting to look feasible now!

Another flatmate's been having these issues with painfully slow Steam downloads too. They've been fluctuating a bunch at peak hours ever since the sale, and they frequently drop to literally worse-than-dial-up speeds. The minimum I've ever seen was a sustained 2 KB/s.

I had Steam open on another monitor while typing this post. Its minimum speed during that time was 6 KB/s. Its max speed during that time was 15 KB/s. That's 120 Kbps. Or 0.12 Mbps. Or less than 0.1% of advertised speed.

In the words of the old Pantene commercial: "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen".

I'm on cable 100/10Mbps in Island Bay.

A month ago I was getting severe peak congestion, as you are now (at worst, 1.5Mbps at 9pm).
About two weeks ago my speeds suddenly came good again: 100/10 off-peak, 90/10 on-peak (including tonight).
Presumably this was the result a hardware upgrade.

Hopefully the rest of the Wellington cable network will be upgraded soon ....

It would be useful to know which areas have had upgrades vs those that haven't. That way those that have been upgraded but still seeing issues know there's probably a bigger issue.
